My visit to beautiful Lake Como was my fourth visit to Italy in the last two years. My stay in Grand Hotel Imperiale is my first negative experience. My husband and I arrived a little too early for check in and had to wait for our room to be ready. Totally understandable. The pleasant, young man on reception offered us complementary use of the pool area if we wanted while we waited and advised us on the best tourist spots and how to reach them conveniently by boat if we'd rather not drive. He also advised us that the Executive Room with lake view that we had booked (considerably more expensive than their standard room) was not available but that they would upgrade us to a Junior Suite. I was a little disappointed to lose the view but I accepted the upgrade. We went out for lunch and when we arrived back at 3.15pm our room still wasn't ready. No big deal, these things happen. At 4pm our room was finally ready. I knew as soon as we stepped out the doors of the lift that we were in the less expensive part of the hotel but I soldiered on. I must admit I was more than a little miffed when I opened our room door and discovered that we most certainly had not been upgraded to a Junior suite. We had been downgraded to their most basic room, with a horrendous view of overgrown weeds. I was so angry. The hotel basically stole from us. We prepaid for an Executive Room and they lied to us, tricked us and moved us to a much cheaper room AFTER TAKING OUR MONEY in advance. I immediately returned to reception and refused the room we were offered. The young man on reception spoke to the manager in the back room and returned apologising and offered to move us. The manger hid in the back room and would not speak to us. The receptionist escorted us to the new room, an Executive Room with a lake view. The room we originally booked suddenly managed to be available. Before he left, I told the receptionist I was very unhappy and once again asked to speak to the manager. The manager was unavailable, apparently. The following morning I again asked to speak to the manger but he was busy. I could see him sitting in the back room. I asked a final and third time but I received the same excuse. The manager never spoke to us and we were never given a reason why the hotel tried to tick us. There are so many wonderful hotels in Northern Italy. Do not chose this one. They have no respect for their clientele. Book somewhere else and have a wonderful time. We, unfortunately did not. I've noticed management reply to negative reviews here, which only reinforces my opinion that the manager is a coward. A keyboard warrior incapable of dealing with the situation when it presents itself in the hotel. Disgraceful. Collapse

My wife and i took a week off to go to Lake Como few weeks ago . we were recommended by a fried of our to this beautiful hotel . Upon our arrival we met the hotel manager Mr Franco . He is a great , put us in to a newer remodeled lake view room and send us gift package upon our arrival. The staff are very helpful ,location is excellant ,breakfast is great. Franco booked us great restaurants every night ,he also recommended a great hiking trail near by. Ferry terminal is just 100 feet away for the day trips,we hardly used our rental car. The The hotel is 5 min aways from Villa D'east . I travel to Italy 2 or 3 time a year and by far this hotel is the best value and service i have experienced in my recent trips. Franco is a great manager and he makes you feel at home. Collapse

Family of 6 booked for 5 nights, staying in 3 different types of rooms. Unfortunately our executive deluxe room with a lake view had been ruined by previous guests who some how managed to literally chain smoke in non smoking rooms. As an asmtha suffer I tried to stay in the room but had to complain after a few hours as the stale smoke began to effect me. The receptionist went out of her way to help us. Offering a room upgrade even though it was only available for 3 nights. Then surprised us with another upgrade eith beautiful lake view for our remaining 2 nights. On top of which the transition from room to room was super efficiently completed without any stress to us! Made our 5 night stay thoroughly enjoyable Collapse

This hotel is in the heart of Moltrasio and right on the lake front. The main accommodation block is set back from the lake, and offers modern accommodations with extremely helpful staff all of whom speak good English. We had a deluxe lake view room on the 4th floor - and our room price had breakfast and a daily visit to the hotel spa included. The room was spacious, clean, and all in-room facilities were well maintained, including a capsule style coffee/tea machine, small balcony from which you could see the lake, and a rain-head style shower in the bathroom. Breakfast runs from 7am until 10am, is very good and offers a wide range of both cooked and non cooked items. There are two restaurants and a separate bar in the hotel. One of the restaurants - Imperialino - is absolutely stunning, with superb food and tables arranged right next to the lake itself. The menu, wine list and service are all first class, and you can expect to pay approximately EUR 150-200 for 2 people including wine. It's perfect for a romantic lakeside meal. The hotel has it's own pool that is fairly small and right on the lake side (accessed via a private tunnel that connects the hotel's main block to the pool and Imperialino restaurant), and the sun loungers get taken very quickly indeed. The pool closes at 7pm which is a bit strange given an early evening dip would be welcomed by everyone! However, the hotel is also 2 minutes walk from the public lido (man-made beach, bar/café, and safe lake swimming area) which will cost you EUR 30 for 2 sun loungers and a large umbrella for the day. On a particularly hot day, we found the lido and swimming in the lake hugely more enjoyable, spacious and refreshing than being at the hotel's own pool. Next to the hotel is a bar and the Hotel Posta with it's excellent outdoor restaurant (these are both literally next door, and approximately 2 minutes walk away). Both are extremely popular and the food/ambience excellent - especially welcome at the end of the day with the sun setting and the heat of the day starting to lift. Moltrasio itself is a small commune approximately 10 minutes by taxi from the nearest town, Cenobbio. You can get to Cenobbio by taxi (these are expensive, and will cost you EUR 20 each way) or water bus (much cheaper at EURO 2.50 each way). A taxi to the airport at Milan Malpensa will cost a staggering EUR 120 one way, and takes approximately 40 minutes. In summary - as a base to explore the southern portion of Lake Como, this hotel is perfectly placed and ideal for couples, groups of friends or those without children who need a lot of things to do/see to keep them happy.
