The room we had was adequate for our one night stay, but everything is in need of some tlc. We decided to dine in the hotel's restaurant (open from 6pm) we arrived at 7.10pm & were told they were still setting up following a function. The meal was ok & we were the only 2 in the restaurant. Obviously few people were expected as the receptionist also waits on the tables for dinner & breakfast. Overall nothing outstanding & certainly not fine dining!. Collapse

Fantastic building, Fantastic staff

The features in the building are superb, and character second to none. The staff could not do enough for me. A pleasure to be there. I called in very early in the morning and they were very accommodating, polite and helpful.

I needed a place to stay in Stoke as I was on a business trip. I looked on line and spotted the George Hotel in Stoke. Looking at the pictures the hotel gave me an impression of being a little old however it also showed that it had character! Yeah right what an understatement that was. I arrived at the hotel after a 6 hour journey from London I was tired and just needed a hot meal and then relax either using the internet or watching TV. My first impressions of the hotel was good however when I walked in to the main reception I was greeted by a stale smell which had a hint of cigarette smokiness about it. I walked up the reception and I was greeted nicely by a young receptionist who greeted me well. However, as she got up to get my key I noticed her uniform was to be that of jogging bottoms and trainers. Anyway she gave me a key for my room and up I went. I entered the room and found that it was a single room not a double as ordered. The room itself was very small smelly and dusty. I decided to head back down to reception and try and upgrade to a double room. Whilst walking I bumped into a lady we exchanged hellos and she informed me that she’d just got out of prison and this was the only place she could get to live in (Which was nice!) I carried on down to the reception and bumped into another lady who clearly was high on something however she was polite to me and asked if I was ok I replied yeah I’m fine however, I’ve no internet or TV she replied that she was a down and out and the council have found her this place to stay. It then dawned on me that this place was used by the council for emergency housing! The receptionist gave me another room which was a double room. I entered this room and again the room smelt stale and stank of smoke. I noticed that I had two bed side lamps one had no bulb and the other no lamp shade just the bulb exposed! The TV was hanging off the wall bracket and did not work. I also had no internet. The bathroom stank again of smoke and mould was on the shower head and parts of the wall. I went back down to the reception and got another room, this time I could not even get into the room the key was not the correct key for the door. Back down I went to attempt to get room number 4. Room number 4 was down a dark staircase which the carpet was worn out. I opened the door and was greeted by yet more stale air and smoky smells. As I had 2 laptops in my luggage I needed to lock the door and to my surprise the door lock had no mechanism to which I can lock the door. I noticed that where the strike plate is situated part of the wall had been broken away which would weaken the lock and make it easy for someone to break in. I moved my dressing table in front of the door therefore securing the door. The shower again was mouldy, the carpets had holes in them and stains. The blinds were broken and very dirty. There was damp on the walls. The heating was on full blast however the room was cold so there must have been a gap somewhere where the cold air was getting into the room. I managed to get to sleep albeit snooze as I did not feel comfortable in this hotel at all. Morning came and I boycotted my breakfast as if my room was anything to go by I wondered what the kitchen would be like! I don’t normally go to Macdonalds however that was best Sausage and egg Mcmuffin I’ve had. If I hadn’t have gone over to the Kismet Curry house (very nice!!!) and had 2 pints of beer I would’ve told the hotel to get stuffed and gone to another hotel but I had no choice but to stay and live with it! WHAT EVER YOU DO, DO NOT BOOK YOUR STAY HERE. THIS HOTEL IS A TOTAL UTTER DISGRACE AND SHOULD NOT HAVE 3 STARS I WOULD NOT EVEN GIVE IT A SINGLE STAR. THE BUIDING FROM OUTSIDE LOOKS STUNNING BUT INSIDE ITS HELL!!!!! Collapse

Oh dear....where do I start??!! Maybe with the good point...yes 1 good point! That is that the female member of staff was lovely. On arrival we were told there was no cooked breakfast (even though we had just been charged minutes before) Walking to our room we were graced with the smell of stale smoke and very tired worn carpets. The second we walked in we had to open the window the smell was awful. The carpets were filthy with very noticeable stains! The wallpaper was peeling off the walls and the net curtains were discoloured and filthy. We saw that there was a tiny wee sofa thing (covered in dust) for both of my children to share??!! (They’re 11 & 5 and one boy & one girl) when I rang I was told this room would accommodate all of us?! Anyway there was no bedding for them and no towels either. (The receptionist kindly sorted this) we tried to put the tv on to keep the children entertained whilst we got ready only to find out if didn’t work! (No picture). As we headed out for tea we let reception know and she said that the maintenance guy was due soon. When we returned back to our room we were disappointed that the tv still didn’t work. (We can’t say we were surprised!) the night was awful, we had random knocks at our door and someone was clearly smoking in the hotel and with the general stink of the place we had to keep the window open all night. For the first time in a very long time I hardly got any sleep, and when I did I was woken but someone shouting on a phone call right outside our door) The mattress was soft but very bumpy and we had one very thin pillow each. The bed frame was a lovey old 4 poster bed but the thick amount of dust on it was just disgusting. In the morning as headed out of our room we saw someone had thrown all the towels and bedding outside their room and just left it....as we headed down but breakfast had finished (we weren’t told what time it was served) we found a member of staff and she didn’t ask us how our stay was or if we wanted breakfast (or at least a refund for it!) she just asked for the key back and walked off.... I will never ever stay here again! I’d rather sleep in my car...children included. I wish I’d have read the reviwes before choosing to pay almost £100 for a night of hell! .... as a born and bred stokie I couldn’t believe how bad this place is! we can’t wait to get back home in Scotland!
