The hotel was ideally located for exploring Colchester, being right in the heart of town. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the bar area felt warm and welcoming - perfect after a days shopping! Colchester castle is a 5 minute walk from the hotel and there are plenty of places to eat and drink, all within walking distance of the hotel. Collapse

From start to finish my experience with this hotel was unproffesional! Firstly, I was told that both my cards had been declined when booking over the phone, then I was told the machine wasn't working properly and that I would be rung back within an hour.....still waiting! Rang two days later and managed to book, on checking my bank account I had been charged on the original day of booking!! Admittedly I was reimbursed. Then on the day of my stay........I had to pay to park which I hadn't been told about at the time of booking, £9.50. I also had to pay a 'Bonding' payment of £25.00 in case I used their facilities, not sure what they were as there was no mini bar in the room! This wasn't returned on check out, I was told it would take up to three days for it to be repaid into my bank account, they wouldn't accept cash!!! Next, onto the room.....words fail me, it was soooo hot and you could not turn the radiators off as they were on a timer for the whole hotel! I've just returned from Thailand and it was hotter in that bedroom than it was in Hua Hin!! The TV didn't work, so no catch up on Match of the Day! When we did speak to anyone it was a case of sorry but.........! Breakfast the next day was of a good variety but we waited half an hour on the cooked food and when it did arrive it was tepid!! So all in all NEVER EVER AGAIN!!!!! Collapse

Arrived at 18:20 parked in the car park at the rear of the building and made my way to reception. I was Informed about the cost to park my car for the night £9.50!! After paying and displaying my car parking ticket made my way back to the reception. Told the room number and signed the paperwork. Made my way up a set of very steep and very creaky stairs to the first landing and then through double doors to my room. Very disappointing...I paid for an executive suite for two nights, this room was decorated bright red, the street lights and the hotel lights at the front of the building were blazing through the paper thin curtains which were not fitted correctly on the rail. The TV is small and the picture is poor. WiFi, there is WiFi provided in the public room and you will struggle to pick up a signal in the bedroom. If this is an executive suite then god help anyone who stays in a standard room. Back down to reception to complain to be told that there were no other "executive rooms" (and I use theses words "executive suite" tongue in cheek) available. Receptionist told me that they would move me in the morning to another "executive suite" and told the room number 504. Back up to the room. The room was blisteringly hot and there was nowhere to turn down the thermostat or turn off the radiators. They do provide a fan, but it's huge and would keep a marquee cool. I could open the bottom windows but not the top and the secondary glazing was only in one window and a part of one in another window. So for the first night I had to endure all of the road noise, drunk revellers, a sauna and the equivalent of a sunny day streaming through the paper thin curtains and to top it all, from 4 am in the morning the street cleaners and delivery lorries began to arrive!! Prior to settling down for the night (which proved to be no sleep at all) , I chose to go down to the restaurant for an evening meal, another bad choice. I choice from the bar menu the Ham, egg, chips and peas. The ham was OK but the eggs were under cooked, the chips were over cooked, the peas were swimming in butter and for some reason a lump of soggy lettuce covered in a fountain of acidic salad dressing was plonked to the side of the plate. The next day. Absolutely shattered, made my way to breakfast and ordered a full fry without mushrooms and waited for ages. Breakfast arrived pot of tea, two eggs, one sausage, a rasher of bacon, half a grilled tomato and a few beans (£10.50). Granted you could choose from a selection of small boxed cereals, toast and juice. I had to ask for salt and pepper, as there was none provide on the table as well as asking for sweeteners for my tea. I had my breakfast and went back to reception to confirm that my room was to be changed and that my belongings would be transferred over from 502. All agreed and given the number of the new room - 405. All agreed. However, just in case I removed everything from the room and put them back in my car except two shirts which were hung up in the wardrobe. Off to work. I was away for the whole day returning at 18:05. During the day I had read a few reviews about the hotel and had found out that parking at the front of the hotel is free between the hours of 18:00 and 08:00. Parked in front of the building and went into the hotel to meet the receptionist. Introduced myself and asked if my room was ready for me and could I have the key. Blank look from the receptionist who informed me that I had booked out of the hotel and that there was no room available for the night. Explained what was arranged and off she went to make phone calls, came back non the wiser and started to look for a room on the computer. OK... she found a room 412 an executive suite the last one...hooray! Asked about my shirts to be told they would still be in room 502 and that she was only standing in for the receptionist and didn't know for sure or they could be in the laundry area. So we go up to 502 and guess what...NO SHIRTS...more frantic phone calls. Lets cut to the chase, after even more phone calls, help from her colleagues, me losing my crunch, me...absolutely shattered, needing a bath and a stretch out on an "executive bed" I'm told that the room I would be accommodating for that evening was 204. Now remember two nights in an "executive room" was what I booked. 204 was a nice room, warm but with windows I could open and a fan to turn on. Curtains that fitted and very dark when they were closed, a large roll end bath with shower gels, shampoo and large towels. I've won the jackpot... oh, and my shirts are hung up in the wardrobe! 502 is standard and very poor accommodation compared to room 204. As with room 502. There is WiFi, provided in the public room but you will struggle to pick up a signal in this room. Reception tell you it's good...it is not! So, off to a good start but not for long. Bathed, relaxed and down for a meal. A nice burger with skinny chips and a side of cheese for an extra £1, or so I thought! Waited ages...nothing new. Burger arrived, slightly under-cooked, bloody...keeping up with past poor practice. Remember the extra £1 spent for a side of cheese? Well I was served a burger with a teaspoon of cheese plonked on top and then grilled to destruction...and, AGAIN!!, with that horrible soggy salad leaves and acidic dressing! However, I have come to expect nothing less than poor standards at the George Hotel. The next morning I settled the bill and left without going to breakfast, preferring to eat at a local McDonald's. I would like to make a point that one member of staff...Jordan and the breakfast staff were helpful, polite and friendly. Reception....not so good! Would I return...never!!! Collapse

I live approx 5 minutes from The George Hotel and decided to stay there for a night to avoid sleeping in a dusty environment following building work at home. I know the hotel as a place to dine or have a cup of tea or a bar meal. However, this was my first overnight stay there. The room was comfortable, clean and pleasing; it was warm and cosy on a cold evening but it was possible to open the window for ventilation. Tea making facilities with biscuits were provided. /I had a couple of queries and these were very promptly sorted by the staff to whom I spoke./ Overall, it was a quiet environment in which to sleep and I did sleep unusually well. I liked hearing the town hall clock strike the quarters - this ceases at 11 pm but the sound somehow defines the place./ My wake up phone call was prompt; the shower water was plentiful and hot and the towels were soft and fluffy. Good quality bath and hairwashing products. Breakfast provided a menu with a varied choice and the actual food was plentiful and well cooked. Buffet alongside. / Staff worked hard to make one welcome and I felt they worked well as a team to make guests feel at home./ Everything was in place for the weary traveller - even if she did have only a short walk to arrive there!!/ The hotel is old and characterful. Do not look for Premier Inn presentation or a Dallas 5 star; The George has history in spadefuls. I enjoyed my stay and would recommend the hotel to anyone who wants a comfortable night's accommodation. Additionally, the hotel is situated on Colchester High Street and there are many local attractions within a short walk of the front door./Just to say that I did wait to speak to the Manager whom I have met on previous visits to the hotel for tea etc. I gave him my feedback and he did say that it would be helpful if I could put this on TripAdvisor - I had tried but not been successful in doing so. In my view he did not solicit my opinion, as I waited for him to arrive at work so I could give it. I note your caveat at the end of this review. Please use your judgment here. Thank you. I have gone to some trouble to write this as I believe that my overnight stay was well worth both the money that it cost me; and a good subsequent visitor review. Thanks. Collapse
