Resembling an oil painting seen from afar, Amalfi is awash with colour. From the rich greens, greys and browns of the sloping hills and soaring cliffs that frame this idyllic sea port, to the brightly coloured buildings that from its heart are sprinkled out from the town. Amidst this vision lies the Fontana hotel.
Situated in the heart of Amalfi, on Piazza Duomo, the Fontana hotel is ideally situated to explore the wonders and history this stunning town has to offer. With strong connections to the Orient, visible in the awe inspiring Dome of Sant’Andrea and the striking arches and columns of the Cloister of Paradise, Amalfi is said to be responsible for the introduction of coffee, carpets and paper to Italy.
The rooms at the Fontana hotel emit a distinct spacious and light airy feel, where the summer breeze from the sparkling sea below gently flutters through. Each room comes equipped with personal air-conditioning and heating so you can soak in the captivating scenes and surroundings in comfort. Also provided is Satellite TV, mini-bar, a direct phone line and en-suite bathrooms.
The Fontana hotel will strive to help you to optimise your stay in Amalfi. From the Grotto dello Smeraldo with its luminous waters to the discovering the astounding heritage in the countless museums, Amalfi has something for everyone. Staff are on hand to assist you where possible and reveal to you an Amalfi filled with mystery, beauty and an overwhelming history.

This review is going to be a little different from my standard. Please humor me. This Hotel is absolutely A1 position in Amalfi. It doesn't get much better as it sits on the piazza. It has soooo much potential to be something special. Now this isn't a negative review. It was fine and suited the purpose - but it could be absolutely awesome and that is where frustration derives. Parking is actually very easy. You park around the headland for 20 euro a night and then walk through a tunnel pretty much to the main part of town and the hotel. You walk up about 25 very steep stairs to the reception. The rooms are basic but are fine. Bfast is simple, nothing special but workable given the food options near by I wasnt stressed. It is clearly a family style hotel as many of the staff have their kids running around in the foyer which again I have no problem with. BUT This hotel could be absolutely awesome but it has no vibe at all. I am sorry to say this but their is just no enthusiasm from the staff. In fact I think if they even smiled their face would crack. Thank goodness for the night manager as he is very happy and smiling. At first I thought it was just rudeness - honestly the attitude of the Bfast staff has to be experienced to be believed. Then I overheard a couple asking the front desk about a bus to ravello to which the response was I don't know - honestly the bus leaves 20m from the hotel - its basic service. After further consideration I realised the issue.......the staff are not confident with their English. Now I am very empathetic with this. We are in Italy and I know about 5 words of Italian so this whole situation is one sided and I am the one to blame. BUT.....there is an old saying "Courtesy costs nothing" a pleasant smile and show of enthusiasm for your guests would change the terrible vibe in this hotel. We are not difficult people to deal with and hate being waited on but we are always polite to our hosts no matter where in the world we are. It is such a shame as this hotel could be absolutely brilliant. SO if staying here brace yourself for a very black and white stay. Amalfi is beautiful and the fontana is in the perfect spot -it just can be frustrating when you realise the potential of the hotel isnt being reached. Plus dare I say this......if you are going to charge 5 Euro a day for internet - make sure it is actually of reasonable standard and your guests don't have to wait an hour for emails to be sent. Would I stay again - yes absolutely but set your expectations appropriately. Collapse

Good location to get the vibe of Amalfi and to travel easily to Ravello, the Villa Cimbrone and Positano. Very good ensuite and air conditioning. I booked the hotel knowing it would be noisy because of its location in the square but the noise was higher than expected even with doors & shutters closed (the shutters didn't close properly). The room was large with a high ceiling. A very minor point - the TV was situated almost at the top of the wall and you would need to bring along a telescope to see the screen. Furniture was old but in keeping with the building but broken and couldn't be used except for the wardrobe. The breakfast area is in reception and far too small with guests trying hard not to bump into each other. It is also the first place I have come across in Italy that doesn't know how to make coffee. The staff didn't exactly go out of their way to be friendly. Also a first. The Fontana is a 3 star 'minus' hotel and I definitely wouldn't stay there again or recommend it to anyone unless you are looking for somewhere basic with no frills. Collapse

This quaint little hotel is in the perfect position for an Amalfi stay. The front faces the beautiful Ocean, and the back the Piazza Duomo with the stunning imposing St Andrea Church in the background. On arriving, we realised we had to take our heavy bags up some very steep stairs to the front door. Luckily there was a lovely man eating gelato on the steps that offered to help. The hotel reminds me of my Nonna’s house, tiled floors, old school furniture and mismatching paintings all over the place. But it feels authentic. The room we stayed in was quite large with a double and two single beds and an amazing view out to the beach. You could never get sick of that view. Unfortunately the staff weren’t a very cheerful bunch. The only one that had a smile on her face was a woman working behind the front desk with a two week baby in her arms, obviously part of the family. She was very friendly and chatty. The rest of staff seemed like they would rather be somewhere else (perhaps the beach??) Anyway, this didn’t detract from the stunning location. This hotel is very well priced and in the perfect position to walk across the road to all the beach clubs. If you’re wanting something more glam, The stunning Hotel Residence next door matches for location, but at double the price. You don’t spend much time in your room other than sleeping, so this place was perfect. I would definitely recommend it, but it would be nice if the staff were more hospitable. Ps- be prepared for some impromptu fireworks at midnight for no apparent reason Collapse
