Across the street from Grand Central Station (Lexington Ave entrance). The Fitzpatrick is a nicely renovated older property, currently undergoing exterior restoration (scaffolding obscured front entrance). We arrived early and the Bell Cap was most helpful checking luggage and delivering when room was ready (he also recommended a great little “NYC” diner down the street for breakfast). Room was small (typical of most NYC older hotels) with limited closet space. King size bed / pillows very comfortable. Nice bathroom with high ceiling, excellent towels / toiletries, and great shower (shower head high on the wall – nice for tall guys). No street noise, however, A/C unit cycling on and off at night which was a little annoying. Window view was an adjacent wall (but who cares – you don’t visit NYC for the hotel view). Collapse

Booked following TA reviews. Firstly the location is superb. 2minute walk to Grand Central Station but down a quiet street. We were tight for time getting to the hotel as it took 2 hours to get through customs and we had to be at a concert for 5pm. I checked in whilst my sister discussed with the concierge how to get to our concert destination. Check in was efficient and friendly. On entering our room we discovered we had been upgraded to a suite and there was complimentary full sized bottle of champagne on ice and chocolate covered strawberries (my sister had noted in the booking that it was a birthday celebration)- what a result. We got a phone call from reception shortly after we had gone up to check that we were happy (nice touch) Room was huge. Queen size bed which was one of the most comfortable I have ever experienced. My sister described it as sleeping on a marshmallow but not waking up stiff or with a bad back. The curtains blocked out all the light so on waking up it could have been any time of the day. There was a TV opposite the bed, separate sitting area with another TV and large bathroom with bath and shower. Safe in the wardrobe was easy to use though may be a little high if you are of anything below 5'6". Complimentary toiletries of a good quality. Coffee machine (with tea facility too). Robes and slippers.AC perhaps a little noisy but effective. No view to talk of but really not an issue. Everywhere, including communal areas, was clean. As we were about to leave the hotel to go to the subway we were a little unsure of which way to turn. As I stepped back to go back to the concierge I almost stood on a man's foot(totally my fault but he kept apologising). He started chatting and asking whether we were on holiday. When we explained we were in New York for a concert but were tight for time and not sure how to get there he said he would accompany us to the subway and show us which train. He did this and also advised us which subway ticket to get. Spot on and very kind- saved us a lot of stress and angst. The next morning we asked for suggestions for breakfast and were directed to John's about 5 min walk away- good choice (see review for there). On our final day we had not had time to drink our champagne so asked Janice on reception, cheekily, whether, when we returned from breakfast (at John's again) we could bring our champagne down to the lobby (free wifi whereas chargeable in our room) to drink after we had checked out. This was NO PROBLEM and they would get us glasses when we were sat down. My sister asked if it could be put back on ice as obviously the original had melted- again NO PROBLEM. In addition Janice offered us a complimentary late check out which was a lovely gesture and meant our last day was not rushed. . When we returned from breakfast the sun was shining so we asked if we could push out luck and drink the champagne on the patio area to take advantage- Janice had to check as this was the bar area but again NO PROBLEM as the champagne had been provided by the hotel. On going up to our room to pack we got a phone call from Janice to inform us that she had not put the champagne on ice but a fresh bottle was on ice, complete with glasses, on the patio! What service. On collecting our luggage from the left luggage we met up with out train saviour- Maximillion (yes, really). This time, instead of a tracksuit he was suited and booted and looked very dapper. He was working on reception so must have been going off duty when we first encountered him. This hotel was not expensive by New York standards and we were fortunate to experience an upgrade but the customer service alone has meant it would be a first choice when we return to New York. Fitzpatrick Grand Central hotel manager you should be proud of our hotel but more so you should be proud of your staff as it is they who leave the lasting impression and one that we share, and bore, our British friends with.
