Dated, unmanned, but could be so successful

I have stayed in hotels on business since 1990’s.. This hotel reminds me of Ramsey’s Hotel Nightmares! Firstly, I struggled to find the hotel, but then after some educated guesses I found it, pulling up on a noisy gravel drive (sorry guests). When I walked into my room my immediate thought was how dated it was. Not a problem, but then the TV didn’t work, so after a very rare room change I was given something more suitable for the price I’ll pay; although still very 1980's (I remember)! Felt a bit lonely as I was pretty much the only person to venture into the bar (Monday night). The elderly lady (my mum’s age) at reception did everything and was very friendly and helpful, but I did feel there was a lack of staff. There was a Romanian lady who was busy setting up for the morning and one old guy hanging about coughing, but I was given the impression that they were desperately understaffed / lacking customers. Empty glass not re-filled (or asked if I wished it to be) I went to bed feeling a bit flat. I’ll cancel all future bookings, unfortunately, and go to somewhere a bit more expensive and bit further away, but with life and love! What a shame!!!! Collapse
So much potential to be better

Checked in for a 1 night stay as we had a wedding at a nearby venue. The thing about the hospitality industry is that you need to be *hospitable*. An older lady checked us in, she wasn’t particularly welcoming, friendly or enthusiastic. She was just to the point. Got the impression she didn’t want to be there. Later transpired she forgot to give us our WiFi tokens too. Anyway, this is where it gets silly. She gave us a key to room 26. It was up a few awkward flights of steps. Not a problem, it’s a big old building. We opened the door and it had either not been cleaned from previous occupant, or someone was still staying there. We were greeted by an unkept bed and a drink on the side, and dirty towels on the floor. I went back downstairs, there was tall chap on reception, who was friendlier, seemed slightly embarrased that this happened and gave us a key for room 25. The room seemed ok but now the toilet wasn’t clean - there was a poo stain and body hair in and around it! Again, I went downstairs to complain, older lady said “we’ve got a new cleaner” or words to that effect. The implication being that the housekeeper was new and didn’t know how to clean a toilet. They gave us room 23, which was much nicer. The bathroom was very nice - clearly just been refurbed (it still had a dust on the shower head, in fact there’s lots of dust in the public areas, they really need to fix this) the rest of the room was ok. One of the towels hadn’t been washed properly. There was make up on it. By this point I couldn’t be bothered to take the towel downstairs to get a new one. We only had a small window to rest up and get to a wedding reception. Anyway, we slept well, duvet was really nice and warm, except the next morning, wife had a cold shower. She waited ages for shower water to heat up but she ran out of patience. She left it running for me, by which time the water was hot. After the check-in & room change shenanigans, we couldn’t be bothered to complain about it. We were tired, hungover and just wanted to get out of there. We skipped breakfast based on the cleanliness of the rest of the hotel. As far as positives go- the view was nice, the grounds are very lovely. This is actually a beautiful grand old building and I’m sure will be nicer after refurbishment. The checkout staff the next morning seemed really nice- two young ladies, contact with them was minimal, but they were good at their jobs- far warmer, nicer and friendlier than the previous day’s staff. This stuff is important. Unfortunately, we wouldn’t stay here again and I can’t recommend it. Its sad because it has so much potential. It’s clearly being refurbished, but guests aren’t warned of this at time of booking or check-in. They need to sort the basics. Give it a deep clean, keep cleaning the dust created by the refurbishment and train some of your staff on basic customer service. Collapse

Went for an evening event and stayed overnight. Evening meal really good. Room was comfortable but bed very soft. Lovely view at front of hotel. Poor sound proofing, as could hear couple next door arguing (hotel dealt with the late night arguing for us as soon as we reported it). Breakfast was mediocre- we like good tea/coffee and it was disappointing to have a big flask which everyone took from. Overall good value for money though. Collapse

Went to the Farnham house hotel for afternoon tea with a group of about 30 of us . Upon arrival the first thing I noticed was the minor building work going on out the front of hotel , no one was working that weekend but all all the tools and materials were left on show which was a real eye sore . I can't say to much about the inside of the hotel as I didn't stay there , I only went to the bar where it took someone about 10 minutes to come and serve me , but within that 10 minutes I noticed the bar area was actually that nice and had no atmosphere. As for afternoon tea there wasn't enough places for party that had arrived , so they had to rush about and try and make up another table . They started bringing the sandwiches out and the first thing noticeable was the lack of quality of the sandwiches the bread looked poor and the fillings were terrible a real lack of quality ( chef should hang his/her head in shame ) . To my amazement they only brought out 2 stands per table of 10 , absolutely ridiculous it should be a stand for 2 people , they didn't bring out cream or jam for the scones either !! To be honest I couldn't wait to leave , but before we left we had noticed there had been a table set up for 9 people in the same room and to are amazement they brought people in to have a lunch there while us and all are mess was still in the room and all over the tables, I felt really sorry for the people that were sitting down . All in all it was a terrible experience and not worth the money there are much nicer places about with a better standard and staff that know what they are doing . Collapse
