Stay here for a beautiful view + service...w/ a faulty alarm

The property itself is beautiful, the pool is lackluster but I got a great deal thanks to Orbitz. Service was great (you are able to text), I'm not a huge fan of their 'pending' 200 dollar card charge. That's a large sum to wait a week to clear. Most notably is the alarm. If you look into the threads of reviews it's a pattern that goes on for years. Thankfully I kept my cool and listened to instructions but I wouldn't trust this hotel property for safety reasons. The alarm went off around 230am. Not only is it a regular occurrence but I can assure you that they offer no real resolution/answer to why may have cause their fires. This is a huge property for this to be happening so regularly. Despite the 5 star staff + property management, I wouldn't recommend based on sanity + safety. Collapse

I don't know how I can say anything negative about this classic hotel in the centre of Toronto. If you love history (especially Canadian history), The Royal York feels almost magical-- just wandering the lobby and halls is enjoyable! I live just outside Toronto, but my partner is from NY so a night at The Royal York has become a bit of a romantic treat for us when he can only visit for a short stay. With Union across the road and the Porter Shuttle coming right to the door, it is the absolute perfect location. That aside, the experience with everything in the hotel is always so wonderful that I don't think we'd want to stay anywhere else. Everything is fantastic - staff, location, cleanliness, etc. I think, if I had ONE small note, it's that you don't necessarily get to select what wing you're in... and since half the hotel has been renovated and the rest hasn't, you will be paying the same $$ for either a stunning (STUNNING) renovated room OR a bit of an older room, that doesn't have the luxurious feel of a renovated one. Obviously amenities are the same, but I will say once you are used to having a renovated suite it's a slight letdown to be put in one that hasn't been made-over yet. But, aside from that, the hotel is wonderful. I'm sure we'll be back again soon. Collapse

I have passed by the Fairmont Royal York on numerous occasions and had always wanted to stay there. This year, we decided to celebrate our Valentine's Day there overnight. In summary, I wasn't overly impressed with the service or the room, but the location and overall look of the hotel were fabulous. My fiance had requested some sort surprise in our room for me as we had recently gotten engaged. When he checked in, they did not honour this request. In fact, it wasn't in their record at all. A hotel as large and reputable as this one should not be making mistakes of this nature. The woman at the front desk did rectify this for us and it was no longer a surprise, but lovely. We got champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries. When we entered our room, which was upgraded for us for the inconvenience, I was honestly really unimpressed with the look. It was small, fairly modern but there was no WOW to it, despite having paid an above-average price. I expected much nicer for this type of hotel. It was clean and comfortable though! The service overall was also quite average. They refused to bring ice to us (it would cost us a fee which I've NEVER heard of), and no one was overly friendly. Overall, I would say that if you're looking for a great location and average stay, I would recommend this hotel. It is beautiful in the main lobby and close to so many things. If you're looking to justify paying an above-average price, this may not be the place. I truly wasn't blown away in any way. Collapse

Stayed here for the 3rd time and it was fabulous. We stayed on the Gold floor and the service was excellent. Courteous and friendly staff who are happy to answer any queries you may have. The room and beds were comfortable. Housekeeping staff do an admirable job keeping the room and hotel spotlessly clean. As others have said, if you want uber modern then this is not the hotel for you, but if you want to stay somewhere with some history and character then you wouldn't go wrong to choose the Royal York.
