This hotel is upper west side so we had to use the subway to get to the main attractions. This did not phase us & there was a subway station at the top of the avenue. Location great for Central Park & National History Museum. The hotel itself was very traditional & quaint. The staff were very friendly from reception, porters & cleaners. The rooms were lovely & bathroom adequate with lots of towels changed everyday. The only thing lacking for anyone from the UK is that there are no tea/coffee making facilities in the room. We really missed not having a kettle or fridge. Not been able to make a hot drink after doing hours of walking & tourists things around Manhattan was dissspointing at the end of the day. Also, check for extra costs that can be added onto your bill without knowing until check out. Collapse

I have stayed here before and the hotel is in a great location and the rooms are nice enough for me...quiet, clean and comfortable. I never write reviews but decided to this time because the front desk staff has either been rude the approximately four times I have stayed there (or at least make you feel unwelcome). I do not understand this except as someone in the neighborhood said "they don't have to be nice b/c of their location...upper west side near the park so they will always have enough business". The other mind boggling thing is that there is not only no coffee maker in the room. When I went to the second floor dining area to ask for coffee, I was quickly advised by an unapologetic waitress that I should go to the lobby if I wanted coffee and that I could not get a cup in the dining room unless I bought breakfast. I went to lobby only to be directed to a keurig coffee maker in a corner on the opposite side of the front desk. There were two guests waiting behind me by the time I finished making my cup of coffee. This day in age I cannot believe they do not offer coffee in your room....I don't know of any other hotel that does not. I am imagine that they have staff meetings at this hotel where they are instructed that whatever they do, they must NOT give their guests a free cup of coffee. Collapse

I arrived at this hotel with my young son and wasn’t helped at all with my cases to our room. The man at the desk was extremely rude and just shoved a piece of paper over the desk for me to sign. He was rude and non responsive when I asked what I was signing for. This as I understood was that I would pay for any breakages to the room during my stay! I was also asked for my credit card as security, the woman who was also very rude and not welcoming handed this back to me with a key card to the room! The heater in the room was broken to the extent I scraped my leg when walking past it. The whole front was not fixed properly. The three drawers in the room were also broken and could not be used and the toilet kept getting blocked and making a terrible screeching sound when you flushed it. I went and told the same guy at the desk all of this and was just looked at blankly and that he could not change the room but would get the maintenance person to take a look! The toilet failed all the way through and there is not enough space to hang your clothes up so I lived out of the suitcases. No tea or coffee facilities or mini fridge unless you hire it. There are no proper headboards for the beds as the padded parts have been placed above the heads and the side lights are soo bright. I couldn’t sit and read while my child slept as they were so bright! I have stayed in NYC before down town which was much easier for getting to most of the attractions and travel. I can’t think of any benefits staying in this hotel, apart from the fact there is a Starbucks just over the road and the-maid is really good. I would def not recommend this outdated run down hotel with grumpy rude staff. Collapse

The word “excelsior” is most often used to indicate superior quality and after spending almost two weeks at the extraordinary Excelsior Hotel at 81st Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue, not only does this hotel live up to its dictionary meaning, it by far surpasses it! As my story goes…I decided to lodge at the Excelsior hotel because I had just come from staying at another hotel on the Upper West Side and I wanted to continue lodging in this vicinity. After staying at the Excelsior for just a day, I was so extremely satisfied with this hotel that I decided to extend my stay for at least another week or two! The Excelsior is truly a lovely vintage hotel in an ideal location whereby a walk to Central Park or to the Museum of Natural History can easily be less than a NYC minute. The Hotel itself was built in the 1930’s and is so beautifully well preserved that even its vintage marble and cherry wood lobby interiors look as beautiful today as it must have when this hotel first opened. The hotel offers an array of various types of hotel rooms and the one that was assigned to me was so perfect!!! Overall, all of the Excelsior hotel rooms offer charm, elegance, space and most important, affordability. The entire front desk staff are so terrifically professional, friendly hard working employees who perform at their very best everyday, around the clock in order to accommodate all hotel visitors. Special mention to Scott and Nicole and to Brad, who has to be one of the best bell captains I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I love this hotel!! Jeff M. Collapse
