This hotel is in a very good location, has its own car park (for which there is a charge) and has friendly front desk staff. It's recently been refurbished (signs say that it's ongoing but we didn't see any sign of work in progress) - our bedroom appeared neat and clean and all the corridors have been freshly painted and carpeted. The hotel itself is like a rabbit warren - the hotel has had many expansions which means that there are corridors and stairs everywhere. We were in room 247. The bed wasn't that comfortable although the room was quiet. We did sleep but I've had a better quality of sleep in other hotels. The room had no view - it looked out on a brick wall about 10 feet away. The windows were very dirty - both inside and out - although, as there was nothing to see, you didn't need to see through them! The bathroom was big and clean with a bath with shower over, toilet, bidet and basin. The linkage on the bidet plug was broken when we arrived at the room. When we manually removed the plug it was very slow to drain - I think it was blocked. We left the bidet with the plug removed when we went out the next day. The cleaner could not have failed to notice that there was a problem with the bidet. When we returned that evening the plug was back in the bidet and still not working nor was the blockage cleared. We had breakfast twice at the hotel. The first day we arrived just after the rush and found no clean tables, a depleted buffet and a not particularly attractive room. On our second morning, we didn't arrive just after the rush and found breakfast to be better but the muffins and croissants were still hard and dry and the bacon was inedible. If I return to Durham in the future I would stay here if it were very cheap but I'd rather pay slightly more and get somewhere with fewer problems. Collapse

The Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County is an old hotel that has been updated so you have the best of both worlds - historical charm with up to date rooms and amenities. The location is with walking distance to everything you'd want to see as a tourist to this lovely town. Jon at reception gave us a very warm welcome. He talked about the area, gave us recommendations for restaurants and things to do. Complimentary glasses of wine were offered (and accepted!) before heading out for dinner. Our room had just been remodeled. We had a view of the River Wear and were abled to watch the rowing teams. The room was spotless (thank you housekeeping! As a Marriott titanium member, congratulations to the manager of this property. Your staff does an outstanding job. Collapse

I have just had the pleasure of an overnight stay at the Marriott County Hotel in Durham. The hotel is perfectly situated in the city where you are in the centre within a short 200 yard walk. The hotel itself is a typical Marriott with a very nice and friendly feel to it. The room was very clean and considering I was on the ground floor, very quiet. The next time I stay in Durham I will definitely check the availability of this lovely hotel. Collapse

Located in the heart of historical Durham City. Walking distance to the castle, cathedral, Durham University, shops, restaurants, bars etc. Starbucks is located at the ground floor of Marriott. The staffs are friendly and the reception desk were very helpful. Located next to river and all the historical places are close by. The rooms were of decent size and housekeeping was good. Great place to visit again. Collapse

We stayed here for one night in March 2019. The staff are very helpful and pleasant. Room was clean and comfortable. There was refurbishment going on but didn't affect us. Very central and parking on-site.
