We booked this place through buyagift.com. Yes the hotel is old but that gives it character - the room was fantastic, large space with a huge double bed and a lovely en-suite bathroom. Tea & coffee facilities in the room along with digital TV. The food was top draw! We had soup/prawns to start but the main course where it was quality - we had fish & chips/18oz steak - both were large portions, cooked to perfection! We also had breakfast the next morning, which was cooked to order - I had lovely omelette and my wife full English, there were several cereals, yogurts, etc etc etc all to our liking and a fresh pot of coffee - all this when we were a little late, sitting down 2 mins before breakfast was supposed to finish! However what really sets this place apart is the staff - there is not a thing they wouldn’t do for you. Dudley ran the show, he was there to check us in, out, take our order for evening meal & breakfast the next day and his customer service was exemplary! Will certainly be back and would recommend to anyone! Collapse

I had seen an offer on Groupon and after reading reviews thought it would be good place for my husband's birthday treat. I checked availability before buying voucher and his birthday wasn't available so I rang the hotel to see if I paid full price I could get a booking. Spoke to a great guy called Ben who told me they only did afternoon tea on certain days and the date I wanted wasn't one of them. He told me that Groupon had an offer on at moment and if I booked another date he'd match the price. After reading such good reviews and how nice Ben was, I really wanted to go so booked another date. A week or so before the date a lady rang to say that we were the only people booked on that date and would we like to change it as there would be no atmosphere as we would have to eat in the bar. I was disappointed but arranged another date with her and then a thought struck me and I said 'how do we know this won't happen next time' - I was thinking aloud as a I was wondering if I should let the first booking stand as this could drag out forever. She immediately snapped back at me 'I can't guarantee it, I'm doing you a favour'. I was completely taken aback by her manner and made the new booking. To be honest I nearly rang back later to cancel because of how rude the woman was but because of Ben and the reviews I left it. Now the experience - the hotel is very smart and we received a friendly greeting. Afternoon tea is served in the restaurant which lacked atmosphere but the decor was as lovely as the lady who served us. She brought the Prosecco straight away and asked what hot drinks we'd like - I was very happy that they had Earl Grey. The tea stand arrived shortly afterwards and it looked nice. The sandwiches were plentiful, well made, very fresh but a little disappointing. We have had a lot of afternoon teas so have a lot to compare against. Small triangles of ham and whole grain mustard, cheese and pickle and cucumber sandwiches made in white bread from a sliced loaf and four rolls of smoked salmon in brown bread. They were nice but unimaginative both in fillings and the bread. The scones were freshly made and still warm served with butter, jam and cream and were nice. There were four mini choux buns that were dry and tasteless and two small fairy cakes. Overall, the majority of staff were lovely, the hotel is nice clean and although the food which was good value for money tastes good it's not special! After all the great reviews I'd read we were disappointed. Collapse

Me and partner stayed here for a layover between Liverpool and Scarborough. Booked it using a buyagift voucher. We were not expecting much however, expectations were blown away. Good sized room with a very large bath. The room itself was clean and presentable. We also had dinner at the hotel. 3 courses and they were all generously portioned and delicious. Overall we had a very enjoyable and relaxed time. If we are ever in the area again we will definitely be coming back!!! Collapse

We stayed here recently for one night using a Red Letter Day offer. It wouldn’t have been our first choice but there were limited places to stay in Yorkshire as part of the deal. It is a well run family hotel but the room and especially the bathroom was very dated. It probably hadn’t been updated in over 25 years We stayed early in the week when the hotel was almost empty, so lacked atmosphere. We’d like to make a special mention of Maria who as well as looking after reception also had to look after the bar and was also the sole waitress in the restaurant. We both had steak which was very good. The breakfast was adequate but there wasn’t much choice. Collapse
