We stayed in the Hilton in Chester, the reason being is that it is so close to the zoo. The hotel is lovely and looks stunning as you first drive onto the grounds. I took my 4yo daughter and she absolutely loved it. The staff are fantastic and so polite and helpful. The room was beautiful. Comfy bed, clean bathroom couldn’t ask for more. The only issue I had was the room was so hot I kept waking up in the night boiling. I just couldn’t turn the heating down in the room and didn’t want to ring anyone in the middle of the night which I’m sure they would have been more than happy to help. It is actually our second time at the zoo but we didn’t get around it all last time, this place is amazing and huge. Our only downside to this year was the weather. It rained all day. The animals where hiding and we didn’t see much. Collapse

Hotel location was great for Chester Zoo. Looks lovely and reception staff were very friendly. However in room, children's bed was not ready, food found on floor behind one chair, sunglasses from previous guest on another chair, and sweet found stuck to the carpet. Batteries had gone on both remotes for televisions and air conditioning would not stay on. Staff very good and sorted out all problems quickly but general state of room was unacceptable. Evening restaurant menu limited especially children's menu which had a choice of only 3 things. Reception staff cleared the restaurant bill on departure due to issues with room and again were very good. Overall, hotel and room looked lovely, all staff very helpful but limited menus in restaurant and general cleanliness of room was awful. Collapse

I choose the hotel for the location as it was close to where I was working but the stay at the hotel made the whole trip really enjoyable. Staff and Facilities were really flawless and I can't wait to come back and stay again.

This review would have been 1 star had it not been for a wonderful staff member called Frank! He went out of his way to make an awful stay better. We arrived late at night after a 4 hour drive to a packed car park, it was fine we got a space! When we checked in we waited for a little while whilst the 3 members of staff were chatting amongst themselves and 1 was dealing with a complaint, which should have given us a clue about how our stay was going to go. When we were eventually seen we were given hot cookies, which was a lovely gesture! Check in was okay but I had to ask to leave my card details so we could charge room service to our account, we were asked to leave £50 per night and as we were staying for 2 nights we had £100 held. We stayed on the 2nd floor a little way down the corridor, not much outside noise which was good. The room was basic but we did have robes and a shower over a bath. There was a fridge in the room but it unfortunately wasn’t turned on. We needed to call down to reception to ask a question about breakfast and discovered the phone wasn’t working! We found that the phone was unplugged and when plugged in made an incessant beeping noise every few seconds so we can assume that the previous guest unplugged it! Once we’d made a call we had to unplug it again as it was irritating at best. We filled out a breakfast card left it on the door, plugged our phones in to charge and went to bed. The bed wasn’t the comfiest and the pillows were far to soft to have a good nights sleep, we couldn’t find any spare pillows in the wardrobe so just went to sleep. We ordered breakfast to arrive at 8:30-09:00 and it arrived just after 9, where we were told we needed to pay for a £5 tray charge there and then... this was odd as when we’d checked in we’d put £100 on the room. The lady was very insistent and said we had to pay it and she’d previously checked with reception and there wasn’t anything secured against our room. We asked that she check again as we definitely gave our card details. She came back 5 min later and confirmed that it would be charged to the room but was really grumpy about it. When checking the breakfast we realised that the wrong cereal had been delivered so the phone had to be plugged in and the right cereal ordered. When getting ready to leave we realised our phones weren’t charged and that the plug sockets in the desk weren’t working. When we left that morning we told reception about the faults and asked for firmer pillows... we were met with stoney faced disregard and felt like they didn’t care about what we’re saying. Oh well, off we went to spend the day at the aquarium and Cheshire oaks. On return at 7pm we asked at reception if there was room in the steak restaurant and were told to go the restaurant and ask. When we asked the staff at the restaurant they said there were tables later on but when couldn’t be booked in as they had a large party that would need a lot of service so we went back to our room and went out for dinner instead. Coming back we went to the garden bar and ordered martinis and were told it’d be a 10 min wait as the bar staff didn’t know how to make them and we’d have to wait for another staff member to be contacted to do it. We got our drinks a while later but decided to go back to our room to drink them. When getting ready for bed we looked for the breakfast card and couldn’t find one and because the phone still wasn’t fixed I had to get dressed and trot downstairs to get one - this is when I met Frank who was absolutely lovely and went out of his way to make a crappy stay better. He queried why id come downstairs instead of calling down so I explained all the problems to him - he then asked if a G&T would make things a bit better, when I said yes he asked a colleague to bring 2 up to our room. I got back to the room and couldn’t find the pen! So had to go back to reception to get one. When I went down this time Frank explained that he would be refunding 1 nights stay to make up for all the problems we’d had, which really did make us feel like he was trying to make things better! He was polite, cheery and appeared genuinely concerned about all the issues we’d had. The next morning breakfast arrived and the same problem happened... the person delivering said that we had to pay a tray charge on the card machine there and then, the thing was though that when Frank gave us our breakfast card he wrote that there would be no tray charge and signed it (again another gesture to make up for our bad stay). We asked the lady delivery breakfast to check the card as it should say that the tray charge was waived but again she was insistent that we pay it and after a few minutes of discussion she conceded that we didn’t and the breakfast card did intact reflect that the tray charge was to be waived. The breakfast we had on both days was good and there was plenty of selection to choose from. When it came to getting ready at 9:30 the bathroom didn’t have any hot water so we thought sod it, we’ll just pack up and go. Ordinary I wouldn’t have called down to reception but as the phone still wasn’t fixed and we were in Pj’s it wasn’t worth the hassle. We checked out with the same lady who we reported our faults to the morning previous, When we checked out our bill didn’t reflect the refund we were given by Frank and when queried the lady said ‘oh yes, Frank did mention something in the handover’ it did baffle me that if she knew about it why she didn’t reflect it. After 5 min of typing and what not she printed a new bill and explained that the 1 nights stay would be refunded to our card and that the holding amount we’d secured on our card would also be released - I’ve seen quite a few reviews about this taking a long time so hopefully it’ll be done without a hitch. Overall we wouldn’t recommend a stay here, it honestly felt a little like we were in some carry on film with all the issues, but Frank really is an asset to the team and was the only member of staff that wanted to do something to ask us feel better about our stay. Had a lovely stay here with a 1 yr old and 3 yr old. Room, food and breakfast were great. Staff were friendly and made the 3 yr old feel special in the brasserie - the children’s choices are great too, and kids eat free (when we were there)
