Solid but my least favorite DVC property

We have a lovely vacation but OKW is just "fine" by DVC resort standards. We have gone to AK Lodge, Wilderness Lodge, and Beach Club, and this was a step down. Rooms are huge which is a plus, but it needs a refresh and its dated. 3rd floor walk up was not optimal either. Huge property so make sure you room is near Hospitality House with the good sand pool and kids areas (as well as food/check-in). Nice to have a full kitchen and laundry in the unit. The unit was clean but beds were rock hard and everything was dated (vs other DVC resorts) which may be why its cheaper. Location is just ok - far from MK but a boat ride to Disney Springs. Bus was irritating with too many stops/waiting so we Uber'ed it a lot. Check in/out was easy. The restaurant was overpriced and not great. Quick service was only outside but totally fine. Pool area by main center was excellent -we loved it. Great for kids. Nice little playground + gym as well. All in all, its nice, but not memorable at all. Theming is just ok. I would go back if the price is right but preferred the other DVC resorts over this one, personally. I would consider this a good value choice vs. some of the other DVC units if you are focused on price and unit size vs. location and theming. Collapse

We have vacationed in OKW for about 20 years. Once we stayed in the Turtle Pond area and it was not our favorite location. However, we were located there this year (2018) in a newly renovated handicapped accessible unit that was lovely. It was a much more pleasant location this time. The kitchen cabinets are white beadboard with a dishwasher added. Since it's just the 2 of us, I never use the dishwasher. In making room for the dishwasher, some drawers had to be eliminated and someone stuck the silverware drawer under the sink with pots and pans. Needless to say, the doors would not close. However, there was ample room on the many shelves directly behind the GIANT TV in the Family room for easily available storage. The bathroom was extra nice: all new countertops, cabinets, and facilities. New furniture all around with usb ports located throughout the unit. We have stayed in other resorts, but OKW is our favorite. Collapse

Key West is a beautiful resort that looks like the real Key West but is family oriented and impeccably clean. The staff is wonderful, the boat ride to Downtown Disney is gorgeous and we had a really lovely time.

I’ve stayed in many Disney hotels in Orlando from the All Stars to 3 weeks in the Animal Kingdom Lodge with a savannah view which I loved, but Old Key West resort is like your home away from home, and staff and even the transport all day “welcome home” it is really lovely. There were 3 of us in a studio apartment that was ample room and with the added facility of a full fridge, microwave, toaster and coffee maker in a mini kitchen was so handy. It even had a small balcony with a table and 2 chairs so that you can sit overlook the golf course and pond. The room we stayed in had been updated 2 weeks ago and everything was new. The washing machines were also free and soap etc only $1, so it didn’t cost much doing all the laundry. Oliviers the on site restaurant was fab and better than most of the restaurants in and around the parks )I will review it later separately). Will definitely be coming back. Collapse

Absolutely loved our 1 bedroom villa at Old Key West and our location in Building 41 in the Old Turtle Pond Road area. The rooms are huge and comfortable! It will be hard to stay elsewhere after having so much living space there! Very close to the Turtle Shack pool/snack counter/mug refill/ice machine and within close walking distance to the bus stop (although we used our car at all times). Parking is right outside your villa, which made it convenient to access the villa. Our patio overlooked a pond with a fountain, nice and relaxing. At times, we could hear the buses because they use the roundabout in the parking area as a turnaround, but it wasn't overly annoying. Note that the Turtle Shack pool will be closing for refurbishment soon. Not sure when it will be done. Also, rooms are being updated at this time over the next year. Definitely time for an update, but didn't affect our stay at all! First time having a laundry and kitchen area at Disney, and we definitely used both. The kitchen had ample tools for me to use to make the meals. I had everything I needed. It cut down on meals out and it was nice to have clean laundry to go home with. I didn't need to pack as many clothes as I usually do. Loved taking the boat over to Disney Springs! Convenient and didn't have to look for a parking space in the parking garage. Nice and relaxing 10 minute ride via the boat! I didn't feel like the resort was too large at all, despite the fact that it is one of the largest. Everything we needed was close in proximity to our villa. Our building did not have an elevator, but the stairs were manageable. Only difficulty was unloading/loading our luggage. Sofa bed and chair were comfortable for our kids, master bed was very large and comfortable. We brought a mattress topper, just in case, but didn't need it. However, the couch itself (when not being used as a sofa bed) was uncomfortable to sit on for a length of time. Cushions were hard. Note that buildings 30 and above have double access to the bathroom, through the laundry room and the master bedroom. That was helpful to have, the kids had a way to get to the bathroom without having to go through our room to do so. We had a fantastic stay and will be back again! Collapse
