Good and bad. Clueless bar staff and ridiculously expensive drinks

We visited a few weeks ago, the wife and I. We arrived for a wedding and tried to buy drinks at the bar. The barmaid was new that day apparently, great planning to have her sometimes left on her own on her first day and clueless. I asked if there was a card machine as we'd not had chance to get to a cash machine and was told there wasn't one. So, we are at a wedding unable to but the groom a drink! Another guy went behind the bar and I asked him if the hotel takes cards and he pointed to the card machine behind some glasses at the bar. The new barmaid picked it up, discovered it wasn't turned on and then asked her fellow barmaid (who had reappeared) how to turn it on. Neither knew so the new barmaid disappeared to find help. She reappeared 5 mins later and totally ignored me until I asked if the card machine was now ok. She muttered something to barmaid number 2 about some technical hitch, I had to ask again if it was now working. I was told they couldn't accept cards. This is a hotel with (apparently) rosettes or something and not cheap to stay in so one can safely presume they deal with card payments a lot. After I'd been at the bar for around half an hour I decided, with an hour before the wedding started, and being blanked by the bar staff, to go out and find a cash machine. I eventually found one on in a small shop hidden within a housing estate and got back to the venue with just 15 mins before the wedding started. I had a small soft drink and a glass of Rosé for the wife. After the ludicrous dealings of just trying to get, and pay for, a drink at a wedding I opted for a large one. So we got a lemonade with lime and a large Rosé spritzer and it was over SIXTEEN pounds. When I asked if that was right, I was patronising told, "Well, it IS the Crathorne!" Yep well until I was told where the wedding was, I had never heard of the place. Not quite the showstopper "It IS The Ritz/Harrods". I understand profits have to be made but when I can buy nearly 3 litres of Rosé for the same amount elsewhere, I just thought it was expensive for one glass. To make matters worse, many guys had literally just bought pints when the Master of Ceremonies asked us all to go into the room for the wedding, but told us we couldn't take our drinks in. So you had my wife with a large glass of overpriced cheap plonk, and around a dozen other people left with the option to either drink very quickly or hope the drinks remained in the bar after the ceremony. Aside from the inexperienced bar staff, the card machine fiasco (I later found others were successfully paying by card) and the complete ridiculous mark up of drinks, the actual food was good. The waitresses were only young but all went like clockwork, food was gorgeous, the wedding was good. The toilets were very clean, the hotel is nice but the whole ordering a drink, paying with several limbs and rushing it put me off. I wouldn't recommend the place to be fair. It's okay, but I've stayed in nicer hotels where I've not been patronised. After all, it IS just the Crathorne! Collapse

I booked afternoon tea for my wife and I, admittedly at short notice using internet booking, and received the usual booking confirmation.First impressions were therefore not good when our booking was not recorded. No matter we were shown to a nice table which was set for us in a lovely lounge with open fire. The service from our young waiter was excellent and whilst my wife sampled the savoury tea I ordered the more traditional, both with a glass of chilled champagne. The quality of both meals could not be faulted and my scones were sublime! Though this was not my first visit to Crathorne Hall, it is the first for some time and I remained impressed by the building and the grounds. Afternoon tea and service really were excellent and it was only the booking blip that let a 5 star rating down, which may seem a little harsh as it really didn't cause a problem, but it may have been a different story had the place been full. My recommendation - book more in advance than on the day and you will undoubtedly be assured of an excellent tea. Collapse

Stayed here for our annual night away from the kids whilst visiting family up north. Booked a one night stay with dinner and breakfast included which saved us some money given the prices detailed on the menu. The executive room we booked (Roseberry) was very nice, large and had the biggest bed I think I've ever slept on. The bathroom was plenty big enough and was fully stocked. The food in the restaurant (for dinner and breakfast) was amazing and highly recommended although having asked for some water we were charged £4 for a bottle when some tap water would have done (wasn't offered the option). The staff we amazingly helpful from the receptionist to the bar and dinner staff and nothing seemed like to much trouble. The building itself is very grand albeit not as old as you would imagine and the grounds looked lovely; would have loved to explore had it not been so wet!! The wife even commented on the upkeep of the place as everything looked pristine, not like so many other old buildings like this that seems to be crumbing a little. Our one criticism would be the booking process. Having phoned direct to enquire about booking and having stated that i could get a better deal on another website I was told that this was not possible and it would be corrected if found so. There was no mention of matching the price, just reiteration of the price as it stood. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing and magical stay and would definitely return if given the chance.
