I stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott for the weekend of 20th - 23rd April with my girlfriend and two of our closest friends for my birthday weekend away. We had an early flight from London Stansted and upon reaching the city centre by train, a quick Google Maps told us the hotel was no more than a 10min walk away from the train station (Hauptbahnhof). Upon our arrival, a very friendly member of staff who spoke impeccable English very quickly checked us in, explained how to use the lifts (keycard required) and gave us a free map of the city. The ability to check in early, considering we reached the city at around 10:30am, was a major bonus, especially given the heat of the weekend. The room was sizeable, the bed whilst firm was very large and comfortable. The TV (not that I had come here to watch TV!) had a number of English channels, so at least if you did come back to the room at any point without being asleep you could put the TV on and find something to watch. Free WIFI was available, the bathroom was very modern and smart. I've noticed a few reviewers state they weren't massive fans of the frosted glass window separating the bathroom from the rest of the room, which is fair enough, but it isn't something that particularly bothered me at all. As previously stated, the hotel is only a short 10min walk from the Dom and Hauptbahnhof, and only a few mins walk from two tram stops, one of which we used for our trip to the Zoo whilst we were here. I never ate in the hotel, but the pricing for breakfast appeared reasonable. There is a supermarket and a very nice deli that are only about a minute's walk from the hotel, and we ate in the deli for breakfast everyday. The only minor gripe was that the air-con unit didn't seem to be the easiest to use, especially given the temperature over the weekend, however, it may have been a failing on our part.... Should I visit Köln again in the future, I'd have no problem staying here again, nor would I hesitate recommending to others. Collapse

Booked by our friends, myself and my boyfriend were unsure of what to expect from this chain of hotels having never stayed with yourselves before. On arrival, something pleasing was that we were able to check in straight away despite the time. Having caught an early flight out of London, and taken aback by the heat wave that had hit Cologne, it was refreshing to be able to change and unpack in our rooms before heading out to explore the city. The lobby and the corridors and our room were all cleanly decorated and obviously well maintained by house keeping. The size of the top was also a pleasant surprise as we had not anticipated it. A draw back for me was the glass panel around the bathroom as I didn’t feel it gave us much privacy but otherwise, again clean and modern. I was say it took us around 15 minutes to walk from the centre of the city I.e to the Dom and the train station, which wasn’t all that bad. The hotel is also close to shops and a lovely deli across the road in which we ate breakfast every morning. Didn’t try the food at the hotel but the deli was sufficient for our group. The staff we interacted with were polite, friendly and welcoming. I would say that the member of bar staff we dealt with wasn’t much of a conversationalist and didn’t seem willing to explain which beers you had on offer, but this was just a minor blip. The only other negative I could say was that due to the heat during it stay, I was a little underwhelmed by the air conditioning. There was no clear instructions on how to use and it didn’t seem to cool the room all the much. I haven’t any idea as to whether I was using it correctly or not though! All in all, I would definitely stay here again if I was to visit Cologne in the future. I would also recommend this to anyone wishing to visit depending on their budget. Perfectly suitable for friend groups, families or couples. Collapse

My peeve: two sides of the bath/WC have frosted glass walls, illuminating the bedroom with every trip during the night, and its frosted glass door has a good open inch around its perimeter (for chatting with your roommate while doing whatever). If you don't want to be disturbed by your partner's bathroom habits, go to the older Marriott on Johannisstrasse. Collapse

A Marriott facility which means the bed and pillows are so comfy. The facility is nice with a gym and a restaurant. Suitable for short visits or family visits. Service is good and so are the amenities. The advantage if the hotel it's a 7 minute walk from the main station and cologne Cathedral which makes it a very accessible. Located in a quiet area even though not far from the center buzz. It's good for a two day stay, have a good breakfast. Collapse
