Aston Conference was a great hotel, good facilities, excellent swimming pool, good breakfast and all in a quiet but convenient position for the city. Not that easy to find the allocated parking as there are so many entrances to this large university but staff were helpful. Our deal included dinner the first night but unfortunately the restaurant was closed which was a disappointment, we ate in the bar and the food was ok but menu limited. That's my only complaint, all in all a good place to stay for a visit to Birmingham. Collapse

Stayed at this hotel because of the price. It was a bargain and provides everything you need for a good base close to the city centre. It is a 10 minute walk at most to the bull ring. Just walk out the front of the campus and cross the road at the lights. Take any road opposite but Corporation Street is probably the shortest and follow it straight to the city centre. The hotel is in a university business school building so is a little strange as a hotel but you have all the facilities you need and most guests are there for business conventions or residentials, not too many students so relatively quiet. The food in the evening was really good and although the food at breakfast was good, the whole breakfast experience felt more like a canteen. Rooms had all you needed. Collapse

Awful place, would never stay again. Maybe they should only accept groups.

Let me start by saying that I hated nearly everything to do with this hotel and would never stay again, just to set the tone. The location is absolutely horrible, for several reasons. One, it's on a Uni campus (I actually think it used to be halls of residence). Two, the road/footway layout around it is absolutely godforsaken - that's not their fault, more the horror of the town planning in many areas of Birmingham - it's on a sort of island surrounded by one-way streets, cul-de-sacs and the like. Three, there is just nothing of any interest within reasonable walking distance. It took me *40* minutes to find a parking space. I followed directions to the satnav postcode given in the booking confirmation. This took me to a dead-end without access to the hotel, with no parking. I called reception, and unfortunately got an oddly unhelpful lady - I think she may have been trying to help, but she had a really weird attitude. She asked whether I had booked a parking space, and seemed disbelieveing when I said no (had not realised this was a necessity/option), then proceeded to give me directions for nearby (paid) parking which I would have needed two pages of notes to write down. I tried in vain to follow them, but no joy. I finally ended up round the back of the hotel (still no parking available), then called again. This time she asked if I would like the postcode of the carpark instead - yes, of course I would, I wish you'd have offered this info sooner! Proceeded to find it in 5 minutes with my phone. I checked in with the same lady, who again was just really odd - bit of an arched-eyebrow type demeanour, somewhat disinterested and unfriendly. She proceeded to explain to me that the hotel policy was to charge £50 to guest cards upon check-in, "in case you damage the room"...! I was really in disbelief at this - the only places I can think which might do this are dodgy backpacker hostels and the like. And this place isn't cheap... I wanted to go out for dinner, but there seemed to be no good options in the vicinity, so decided to go to the hotel restaurant. The restaurant is AWFUL. Not the food - that was actually pretty good - but the layout, ambience, and general experience. It's such a weird space, with no clear layout. I can't really describe it better than that it looked, sounded and felt like a work canteen. The opposite of welcoming and cosy, basically. A great big open space, with terrible acoustics, so that the noise coming from the large groups of office workers on away-days (which seems to be the number 1 clientele) was completely deafening. No-one around to greet/seat guests, so I just wandered into this space trying to work out where I should sit as the layout is really confusing. Accosted by a flustered staff member who passed me on to another staff member to seat me - he just could not understand that I wasn't with a group - I literally had to reiterate this 3 times before he would seat me (maybe he couldn't hear over the racket). I don't want to write anything else about this hotel - it's hard enough not to swear in this review - except to say that I decided to give it 2 stars instead of 1 due to the fact that the food was pretty good, and the room was nice enough. Verdict: avoid at all costs. Collapse

I stayed here for a conference and wasn't expecting much more than basic for the accommodation. I was very pleasantly surprised. The room was spacious, spotlessly clean and very well appointed. The bathroom was excellent - I often end up judging a room by the shower! This was excellent! Drinks in the bar were priced sensibly. The food - enjoyed breakfast, lunch and dinner were really good quality and there are room service options. All in all a great place to stay in a fairly central location with good parking close by. I really like this hotel. It is within walking distance to the City Centre as it is conveniently situated at Aston university, with shops and restaurants close by, including and costa and tesco express 2min up the road. The staff are always really friendly and helpful, and the rooms are always clean and tidy. Breakfast is awesome with a huge amount of choice on the buffet. Good choice also on the dinner menu. Only snag is the room service menu in the room lists sandwiches available until late however when I tried to order a sarnie I was told they are only available at lunchtime. But that’s a small snag, I would absolutely stay again. Staff are lovely. Collapse
