The room was better than most hotels. Roomy, good furniture and comfortable bed. The service at this hotel is excellent. Everyone was super helpful and friendly. We found the service a little slow in the bar/restaurant the first night, but it improved. We tended to eat dinner early so we never were able to same the menu in the main restaurant that doesn't open til 6 pm. Good location for touring. On the edge of town and cab ride to town was only 11 Euro. Taxi stands all around the downtown area so no problem grabbing one for the ride back. In the lobby, they have a great device that tells you everything that is currently going on in Cork. Electronic touch screen so you can jump around from screen to screen to see what you'd like to attend. Here's the only downside for me. I thought the bathroom was one of the smallest I've experienced in an upscale hotel. Barely room to turn around. In the shower/tub, the grab bar and soap dish on the wall protrude into the shower area that you either have your skin up again the cold metal or you are leaned into the shower curtain and it is sticking to you. I’ve stayed here before it’s “renovation” and was looking forward to a night of much needed space and relaxation ... a real bath and a view of the river from my bed. I was sadly disappointed. The hotel is in bad condition, and though the staff are kind and sometimes try to help... nothing can mitigate a room where the view from bed is not the river or water but instead the car park and traffic. This is a river view room... but the choice to place the bed facing away from the water view makes no sense at all. There are stains on the carpet, windowsill, towels, desk, in the bathroom and on the cupboard. The mugs for coffee have white residue inside. The “king” is actually two singles pushed together, and not very well at that. The much needed bath was almost thwarted because there was no bath plug even though it should be integral to the Grohe fittings. I tried calling down to ask for another bath plug but the phone didn’t work (lucky I had my mobile on me - pity the tourist who doesn’t). The bathtub /shower has a bolted in metal appliance which probably used to house the shampoo and soap. They couldn’t have taken that out in their much vaunted renovation? The sheets are scratchy and stiff, though clean. There’s a radiator but no integrated air flow system or thermostat that I could see. There are no ceiling lights - only a desk lamp and bedside lights. There is no soundproofing - I heard my upstairs neighbour coughing and stomping until 2am. It’s not worth the €120 I paid for a “deluxe king” at all. I waited to post this review until I had breakfast - hoping that would be a positive. It wasn’t. I went down at 9am, after the morning rush ... for the hot breakfast in their chafing dishes, nothing was actually hot and everything seemed to be weeping water which is an indication that it’s stood out for more than 2 hours. Really bad coffee out of a cheap coffee urn, no real service (I spilled something, and even though there were two servers within 5 foot of me, no one came to help, so I got up and moved). Juices were watered down. The pastries were doughy inside, and tasted of margarine. No effort was made to refill anything when it ran out. Even little things: does a 4 star hotel have thin paper serviettes for napkins? The crockery was chipped and stained. I’ve stayed at small B&Bs where coffee is made to order and everything is home made, and pride is taken with the presentation. Plus points: The location is great if you have a car, and want to situate yourself just outside the city so you don’t have to deal with city traffic. (If you don’t have a car, don’t stay here as there’s nothing within walking distance). The free WiFi is good. The shower is nice and hot, though fixed. Parking is plentiful. I think this hotel would be lucky to be a bad 2 star ... Find somewhere else to stay if you can. The single star I have given is for the staff who try their hardest with a refit that has taken the quality down rather than up. One addendum. Checkout time was 12 midday. I was packing, and at 12.04, there was a knock on my door (despite a do not disturb sign). I was asked if I wanted my room cleaned. I pointed to the Do Not Disturb sign, asked why they knocked despite the sign, and said no because I was packing up to check out. At 12.08 the same cleaner knocked on my door again and said - I need to clean your room now because you’re checking out. I repeated that I was packing and that I would be out in a few minutes. How long, I was asked. Two minutes? At 12.10, I got a call on the phone (I had fixed it - a sticky part needed cleaning), and was asked by the desk manager if I planned to check out today. Third time lucky - gone and not coming back. Collapse
