We have just stayed at the Catalonia Gran Via in Madrid, it is a very nice modernized hotel with most amenities you could wish for and right in the heart of the main central area of Madrid. If you know Gran Via it is one of the most busiest places in Madrid being full of traffic and people. Being May and very warm most days around 80.F. you cannot cool your room as the aircon only delivers warm air until the magic date of June 1st. appears on the calendar, the only solution to cool a room is open the 2 x double glazed windows then the noise from the street is so loud it is impossible to sleep and the noise is there throughout the night until dawn, we speak from experience and you might appreciate and now understand why this hotel has two lots of double glazed window doors. As Madrid is now a very modern city of today this and probably most Spanish hotels should start catering for their paying clients by having the aircons running to accomodate their guests and not the otherway around?? Also many of my fellow travelers said how unhappy they were in not having tea or coffee making facilities in their room, this is very much a general complaint we have heard on many of our holiday over many years so maybe many hotels should make note of what customers would like to have in their rooms to have a comfortable stay, then they might just give more positive feedback for hotels in the future. The hotel is fine, but it is situated on Madrid’s version of Oxford Street, so very busy with both pedestrians and traffic. They are carrying out a road widening programme so not very pleasing from outside. The room was lovely, but if you want peace make sure you don’t stay facing the front. The breakfast was very average. On the plus side the staff were lovely and very helpful. It isn’t far from the Prada Museum or the Park. However, the Palace area is much nicer for eating-the plaza and restaurants nearby are bountiful so we would have preferred to stay in that area. Collapse

Stylish interior in communal areas. The bedrooms was comfortable and even had two separate showers and a bath!! There was no view but as we were only sleeping there I think this was the better option. I believe from the people who had large windows over the Gran Via is was very noisy..... so it depends which you want. It was a bit of a maze finding your room sometimes or to the spa or the breakfast room. both lifts don't get you to the same places. The pool and terrace is very small but looked nice. No time to use if unfortunately. I think the rooms on the top floor have their own private terraces/jacuzzis. There was plenty of choice at breakfast hot food, juices, cereals, pastries, fruit, cold meats and cheeses and even the coffee was drinkable. We didn't try the restaurant in the evening. The bar looked nice and prices didn't seem too outrageous for central madrid. Good situation if you want to be in walking distance of the art musuems, shopping but hotel is also close to the metro. I would definitely use this hotel again. Collapse

We booked this specific hotel based on reviews and location and was massively dissapointed. We had booked this trip as an engagement celebration and 30th birthday celebration and contacted the hotel before hand to let them know. They said they'd make a note of this. We requested a high floor and quite room with double bed and sofa bed for our son. We paid 900Euros,for our 4 night stay. Our room was awful.... Dirty (you can see the layer of dust on the phone from my picture), walls and doors damaged and a very dark room. We were put on floor 2, twin beds and bunk beds, with a view straight into an office block opposite, I could even see the man's screen we were so close!! (look at the attached picture) and it was the noisiest room I have ever had!! 1.30am all of us awake to vans and lorries offloading laundry, this lasted at least half and hour, the noise was unbelievable, my son is usually a very deep sleeper. We were all awake looking down at the deliveries and noise. Next at 6.30am another delivery of food and drink to which the whole lorry was offloaded and trolleys wheeled in and out. The noise was unbelievable, you could actually feel the room vibrate. I immediately got dressed and went at 6.30am to reception to complain. After much discussion, I was told to Pack and we'd be moved after breakfast... Our second offering was laughable. Very dark, old room at the back of hotel, very bleak and looked onto a rusty old roof. I was told one more room was available, floor 5, front of hotel, it looked much better.... Not perfect, but nice enough. We took it. However, I was then told it would be 40euros more, per night. What a joke. This was claimed a 'superior' room, but to me, it was basic and what we should have been given originally. I asked to speak with the manger, she was busy and I was to try later. I went back, furious at this point. No sleep, rude staff and my morning spent packing and at reception, we had a Stadium tour booked at the Santiago bernabau and we were already late for this. After much discussion with the manager, who was adamant we'd have to pay, she checked with her boss and let us have this 'superior' room with out the extra charge. She also said they would give us a bottle of champagne for our celebration, which they hadn't noted when I had contacted them several weeks before. Our Madrid stay was good. Its a lovely city, very disappointed with the hotel. I spent weeks looking for the right one and the rooms were a massive disappointment. Breakfast, was OK. Enough, but not the best. Nice area to sit at though. Bar, lovely. Really comfy and plenty choice. Staff, are just OK, not very friendly though. For the money, i expected more. I would NEVER recommend this hotel, or return. You can see for yourself, within the pictures...... I have noticed that the hotel reply's to good reviews in English, but any bad reviews, in Spanish. So, I welcome your Spanish response to this.
