Not up to Luxury Hotel Standards, but Wonderful Yoga on the Beach

I'll start with the positive. Great location, beautiful views, nice private beach, one of only a few beachfront properties on Key West. Not swimmable due to rocks but that's the nature of Key West. Two beautiful pools. Nice lobby, very good coffee at the cafe (did not eat breakfast at resort, can't comment). Nice atmosphere at outdoor pool cafe for lunch and had one good meal there (and with some major issues, more on that later) I can recommend the fish tacos, the burger, the fries, the cuban sandwich. Once we moved to a room with a balcony & ocean view we were very comfortable. Very comfortable bed, clean room, friendly housekeeping staff. Young woman at front desk who assisted our requested room change was very professional and helpful. (Our first room had a bathroom the size of a tiny closet and you could not open any windows for ocean breezes. Don't book this room). The high light of my time at Casa Marina was the 2 excellent yoga classes on the beach with the lovely instructor Celine. Wonderful class, appropriate for experienced and beginners. Something about sun salutations in front of an ocean, watching the pelicans dive for breakfast as fluffy clouds pass over head. Heaven. Yoga is offered every Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday 8am. Don't miss. This resort has been here for decades which has a certain level of charm and one can appreciate it has withstood many storms. However for the amount of $$$ you will spend you will be astonished how many times you will shake your head and say "really? who's running this place and why aren't they investing in upgrading the facilities. Peeling paint, scruffed up walls in the corridors, malfunctioning elevators. A scary concrete stairwell that feels like you're in an inner city parking garage circa 1970. Sand on the lobby stairs carpet that took an entire day to get vacuumed. Be aware that weddings and corporate events will be happening right outside your balcony so be prepared to enjoy the band till 10:30pm. Now for service. I will sum up that the attitude and professionalism expected in an establishment with these rates was abysmal. Understaffed at the pool restaurant. (Also understaffed at Spenser's by the Sea, the restaurant at their sister property The Reach, we were seated for lunch by a hostess and no one ever came to our table so we left). It's one thing to be understaffed, it's another when there is no competent management stepping in to support struggling servers. The young man who set up our beach chairs did nothing but talk about how he'd been working a 10 hour shift and couldn't wait to get off. The doormen at the front were nice enough friendly guys, happily help you get a taxi, but apparently not trained to actually hold the door for guests. Bottom line, this resort needs a management from the top down hospitality shake down and upgrade. Collapse

Regular visitor to the Casa Marina. A couple of things to know before booking. Go here if you like a private beach and access to two (and three if you count The Reach) pools. The rooms in the Old Main Flagler building are the way to go. They are a little dated in spots - and there is some renovating that is needed - but still they are the best on the property. The food at the outside pool has improved tremendously, and it appears that the popsicles and frozen towels are back - so they have made an effort in the right direction here. The breakfast (both in the main room) and in the side cafe were better and I can now recommend. They are still short on servers at the pool. The biggest issue this trip is that workers twice knocked on my door and entered and upon finding me there, looked at their paperwork and said that they were in the wrong room I believe it was a innocent mistake - but could be suspicious. Either way - not good. Again i think it was innocent - but twice in a week is not good, Great workout room,. Easy to rent bikes and do other events. Do not rent here if you simply want to drink on Duval street. Collapse

Despite spending nearly half as long in Miami immigration as it took to fly there, from the moment we walked in to the hotel the facilities and service were faultless. Special mention to the trainee receptionist who turned what could have been a problem with room availability (due to our arriving so late) into an opportunity to delight us. Collapse
