Budapest - an amazing city

I realise this was a cheap break but the times of the flights meant that we only had 2 days in Budapest, which was very disappointing. The 3.30 a.m. pick up on Saturday was particularly dreadful. I had booked a superior room at the Budapest Hotel, but the room we were given was far from superior. It was small and did not have the promised features such as tea/coffee making facilities, a flat screen television or air conditioning. The carpet was stained and we had to ask for a plug for the bathroom sink. Apparently the air conditioning is switched off in the whole hotel at the end of the summer. We were given a floor-standing fan which took up a lot of floor space when there wasn't much to begin with. We asked about tea/coffee stuff but we're told we had to ask housekeeping as it was not included in the room price. On the second evening we asked again as it would have been nice to have a hot drink whilst waiting for our early pick-up the next day. The desk clerk said he was authorised to let us have a kettle but not to provide us with coffee, tea, milk, sugar or biscuits. He did say he knew where we could buy some but it wasn't nearby. We'll definitely be visiting Budapest again, but will steer clear of the Budapest Hotel. On a positive note, Budapest is a truly beautiful city. There is so much to see and do. We got on the open top sight-seeing bus to travel around a bit and get our bearings, but then we walked and admired and took photographs! We also took advantage of many of the bars, coffee houses etc that were available. The cakes especially were delicious. We also ate at a traditional Hungarian restaurant where we feasted on goulash soup (of course), paprika chicken and dessert consisting of cottage cheese dumplings with soured cream and apricot jam. It may sound odd but don't knock it until you've tried it - it was amazing! The public transport system is brilliant. The trams, metro etc all run to time so we were able to plan what we wanted to do and see. The sightseeing bus tour included a 1 hour cruise on the River Danube. The boat was fairly basic but with fabulous scenery on either side and a large mug of hot wine it was lovely. It is essential to walk along the river after dark when most of the wonderful buildings are floodlit. So unfortunately the flight times limited our time there and the hotel was below the standard we were expecting, we had 2 full, thoroughly enjoyable days in this amazing city. Collapse

The air conditioning system is operating by the hotel, you cannot choose if you want cold or warm and the week we ve visited in the middle of April it was a very warm week but they didnt give me the choice to use the cooling! Euen when i made my complaints to the reception they didnt even bother to apologise! Huge dissapointment!!! Collapse

Compared to USA hotels this chain offers great deals for long stays. The Hotel Budapest is a landmark standing tall, round and proud on the quiet Buda side of Budapest. It has a long history and is not fancy yet very comfortable with a park across the street. It is well connected to transportation all over the city with a tram stop just outside it's doors and bus stops nearby. Although it caters to large tour busses it remains relatively quiet and the only problem is with the limited elevator service at certain times. The rooms are clean and quiet while not fancy they share lovely views of a city I have come to love. Collapse

Booked this hotel via a travel agent referral. Regret not doing any due diligence on this place. The place is a soviet's hovel. Design of building looks like a comms tower. Inside is all frayed carpets, sixties decor and antiquated furniture. No tea or coffee supplied in room. Wifi is very good but you'd expect that from inside Sputnik! Only one plug in the room, no toiletries save for a shampoo/ shower gel combo sealed in a tacky plastic receptacle holstered to the wall that doubled up as a hand sanitiser as none was provided. The rooms beds would not look out of place in a hospital ward and the visibility of pipes through gaps in the rooms wooden pannelling would have made Karl Marx proud at how this hotel opts for functionality over aestheticism! Staff seemed fine but didn't have much interaction with them as the hotel is such an eyesore that it forces you to seek greener pastures as soon as you've thrown your luggage on the floor. You'll see some scenic places in Budapest but this Bete Noir isn't one of them! Collapse
Nice and clean, but old

I loved the personal, the hotel is clean but old and in rooms the furniture is old and the carpet was stained. The breakfast was very good. Lots of foreigners which was cool. Loved the view from our room!
