Acton's Pub and the Orchard cafe are in the Brook Lodge and Macreddin Village complex. The setting is just wonderful, especially in late spring. The Orchard Cafe is a little difficult to locate, as it is in Acton's Pub. There are plenty of different places to sit- we chose the covered yard for the brightness. It is well presented- to sort out old from rebuilt is not easy. Please note the we are reviewind=g the above and not the hotel.Old is good but dust and cobwebs are not. The staff were friendly but not engaged and, after initial good service (the place was empty when we arrived but filled up quickly), we had to stop the staff to get any service at all, and again to get coffee and again to get the bill. When a glass of water was spilled by accident we had to mop it up with our napkins even though it so happened that a staff member was at the table. The food was mostly good. The burger was delicious and served without bun as requested. The salmon was over-cooked. The wine (a crew-top Rioja, quite adequate) was dumped on the table unopened. Look, it's a lovely place but has it got a little self-satisfied? Collapse
Didn’t meet our expectations.

Having stayed in numerous hotels and country houses in Ireland, we were excited to book a trip to Brooklodge for my 30th birthday. We had heard many good reviews, mainly from visits more than 3 years ago. Overall the hotel is charming, with a pretty church, ducks, chickens and a beautiful stream surrounding the premises. As always, the devil is in the detail. The carpets in some areas needed to be replaced, flower pots needed to be replanted, the false flowers around the pool were faded. Towels in the pool were thin and well worn. The area surrounding the hot tub seems neglected with overgrown grass full of weeds, a wood-rotted (previously pretty) bridge over the stream that was tied off with a piece of rope to prevent entry and sodden doormats lead to the tub. We were disappointed to learn the second restaurant was closed on Wednesday nights meaning the only dining option was the fine dining restaurant (the strawberry tree). The food was really good however quite costly. Decor a little outdated. Atmosphere very quiet with people talking in hushed voices. Breakfast was only okay (usually my favourite meal of the day). I requested French Toast, which wasn’t on the menu to be fair, however the kitchen wouldn’t make it. Overall the hotel was quiet with very few guests and was lacking in atmosphere. We were the only two guests in the bar after dinner (for 3 hours) and for an hour on the Thursday morning between 11am and midday. The spa was clean and pleasant, however staff in the spa were not overly friendly and seemed a little under pressure despite the spa not being too busy (which was not very relaxing). The lady at the desk told us we couldn’t have a locker for our personal belongings as they were “saving lockers for guests in the lodges”. We expressed our disappointment with this and were given one locker to share. Otherwise the stay was pleasant, the bedroom was clean and comfortable and the toiletries were nice. The staff at the reception and bar were friendly and afternoon tea was delicious. We had expected more however so were left a little disappointed. Collapse
Still my favourite hotel!

I have always loved Brooklodge. Apart from the fact that it has everything... spa, 2 restaurants, cafe, pool, outdoor Jacuzzi, little old man's pub, beautiful grounds, to name but a few. What makes it stand out for me is the friendliness and warmth of all the staff. Service is something that always lets a nice place down in my opinion but not Brooklodge. However this particular review is for The Wells Spa. We had a wonderful time as always on our 1 night stay in the hotel but my experience in the spa blew me away. I am going through chemo at the moment and didn't let the hotel know in advance for fear they wouldn't want to give me a treatment. As luck would have it, a therapist called Valerie (who I will never forget!) came out to greet me and before too long and after reading my consultation card, informed me that she was trained in Oncology massage and reflexology. I couldn't believe my luck. Then began my 90min blissful treatment. Valerie looked after me like she knew me, like she was my sister or my friend. I felt so minded and cared for during that 90mins and I came out floating. That is what differentiates a good therapist from an excellent therapist. I have already tried to convince my boyfriend to return to Brooklodge so I can visit the spa again!!!:-) Collapse

Stayed here with a large family for a long weekend and while the place has some amazing plus points, especially the quality of their evening meals, the staff and facilities on offer. Plus points include the grounds - its great to walk around and the nearby hills allow of lovely forest adventures. There is also a food market on the first sunday of the month - its great to buy some organic and world foods, a spot of lunch and a beer in their wee local pub. However, the negative points outweighed the pros. The place is in need of a major refurbishment. Carpets are well passed their use by date and the main restaurant in the Strawberry Tree - while the food was excellent, the decor was 1970's Faulty Towers - horrendous and really needs sorted. The ceiling mirrors in particular and purple carpet walls just look out of place now. I have to say the breakfasts were poor too. Not enough choice and very inconsistent with quality in terms of the restaurants are so good at lunch and dinner, but the same kitchen delivers a poor breakfast. Something's not right here. The spa needs looked at too - because of its location you will end up staying quite a while here - some items did not work and the fake plants were covered in dust. Not appealing. The one plus point was a spa outside - which was nice to sit in and relax after a hike. If the decor was sorted - this would be a winner. Nearly there I'd say. Collapse

The food here is some of the best I've ever had. I am vegetarian so they gave us the vegetarian tasting menu which was amazing! The breakfast was delicious and cooked to order unlike many hotels that just do a buffet. I enjoyed my eggs which were fluffy and tasy. The surroundings are like no other and the spa is lovely and relaxing I had a neck and shoulder massage. I reckon some of the rooms need updating for the price but otherwise I can't fault the place or the staff who are wonderful. Collapse
