We visited with friends for their wedding anniversary knowing the Hotel was undergoing a refurbishment. We asked if we could have one of the refurbished rooms. The receptionist (Helen) said there were none available despite the fact that we were checking in early, so surely all the rooms could not have all been allocated. She was quiet rude and most unhelpful. Not good when your first impressions of a hotel are of how you are dealt with in reception. We were told our room was on the second floor, no directions to our room. Once we got there we were very disappointed it was freezing cold and very shabby. With an awful view of the yard. The heated towel rail didn’t work and neither did the radiator. I went down to reception to ask if we could change rooms. Again we were told there were no other rooms available. My husband went and spoke to a young man on reception and he was told someone would go and sort out the problem. We went back to our room only to find it hadn’t been. So again we had to report the problems. My husband then realised that the fuse had been taken out of the heated towel rail so no wonder it didn’t work. He mentioned this to reception so they then got maintenance to replace the fuse. However the radiator still didn’t work so I then asked if we could have a portable heater which we were eventually were given. Our friends were in a room on the 3rd floor and their room had exactly the same problems plus they had a broken bulb in one of the wall lights. So apparently there is a common theme with the rooms. The buffet breakfast was ok but there was no option for poached eggs and the bacon and sausage were of poor quality. There was only a bowl of fruit yoghurt and no natural yoghurt as an alternative. The leisure centre was a joke, the steam room and sauna were out of order. The staff told us the sauna was waiting for parts and the steam room was waiting for a delivery?? We were not told the lockers needed old pound coins so we couldn’t use the lockers. The towels were stained. Not enough chairs/beds around the pool no cold water machine either. So all in all the whole weekend was not a very pleasant experience. Would not stay there again. It’s a shame as the hotel is in a good location. And most of the staff were polite and helpful. We stayed here for a couple of nights in a newly refurbished promenade room which was spacious and very comfortable with a great view. It was a dinner, bed and breakfast package which was very reasonably priced and excellent value. The staff couldn't have been more helpful friendly and pleasant, both on Reception and in the restaurant . Our evening meals were very good; the menu was creative and the food delicious and my other half was pleased with the vegetarian options. I had hake goujons with tartare sauce and salad, steak with all the trimmings and cheese and biscuits(nicely presented with chutney and grapes)and it was all delicious. If you're looking for a modern minimalist hotel this won't be for you, it's a very large, sprawling , beautiful old building and we love it! We look forward to our next visit . Collapse

Suppose to be a suite, but i would class no more than deluxe room at best certainly not worth the money paid. Bathroom very sparse, one hand towel, shower is over bath with no slip mat, so standing in bath is slippery and dangerous. Asked reception for a bath mat twice, eventually walked across road to Morrisons and purchased one. No safe in room, so valuables had to either be carried with you or left in reception, which wasn't really very secure. Breakfast was average. We tried to order room service only to be told this was no rice so we could not have the Chicken Curry or Chili, not very good for a hotel restaurant. surely someone could have nipped across road to Morrison! When we checked out I was told that the bill had not been paid, even though we had paid through Booking.com and the receptionist charged my credit card again. eventually she tried to tell my wife that we would need to contact Booking.com to get the refund. After a very heated debate the receptionist agreed to refund the card. Collapse

Went here last weekend on a pre planned dancing weekend. Room was OK. Some friends had rooms which had recently been facelifted but ours hadn't. Food was better than I have experienced at other places, maybe lacking in quantity on the first night but second night it certainly had improved. Far superior to the visit to The Prince Of Wales Hotel nearby, that food was certainly not good. The ballroom was a reasonably sized area but again in need of attention as there were several water leaks, we had to dance around a wine bucket on the floor and on Saturday night it went very cold but that was put right by several heaters being brought in by staff. It didn't spoil our night. There was confusion at reception on one or two occasions but maybe inexperienced staff - nothing that couldn't be sorted out. Overall an OK weekend but might not go there again. Collapse
