We stayed as a family of three, myself and my two children. We were given two rooms on two different floors - I don't know why the hotel couldn't accommodate a mother being on the same floor as her children, given over 5 months notice. We were told on arrival that check-in wasn't until 3pm - we had booked with Viva Holidays who had booked us a train journey arriving before 1pm. (Avoid Viva Holidays - the 6 night Venice/Lake Garda/Verona package meant staying in out of the way hotels, poorly located for sightseeing in such little time available - exhausted from the travelling schedule with no time for r&r due to the need for lengthy buses/trams etc to get around). One room at Hotel Oliveto we were given was a disabled room - I presume because I had asked for twin beds. It was on the first floor above the main lobby/reception and the noise right up until midnight was unbearable. Staff voices could be heard shouting to each other, echoing across the lobby, together with awful piped music. Every bang and crash was amplified - the noise was incessant and we could not sleep. An old Italian man played cheesy old English songs on a keyboard in the middle of the lobby up until 11pm on a Sunday night - "I did it my way" etc. Just awful. Beds were uncomfortable with just one thin bed sheet. 1 pillow each, so had to ask for extra pillows which came promptly. Rooms appeared clean with mini fridge, TV, good wifi and safe. No air conditioning. Noisy in room during the day as well as the disabled room was close to the swimming pool - so lots of noise from children etc. Lots of dogs in the hotel too. Swimming pool was nice - good size and managed to get a plastic sun lounger ok with parasol. Corner of pool had bubbly jacuzzi function. Good steps leading into pool. Swimming pool situated on first floor probably best thing about the hotel. Gym not open until 9am so didn't get a chance to use. Breakfast: runny scrambled eggs, frankfurter sausage, freshly made Nutella pancakes, boiled eggs, toast, cereal, cake, croissants, fruit, yoghurt, ham and cheese etc. Machine coffee - you have to ask for tea. Hotel is a 20 minute walk from the centre for shops/restaurants/water sports etc - which seems a lot when you want to go out and back a couple of times during the day. Would have preferred a more central location. On check out, reception tried to charge for food and drink from the bar that we hadn't had. We had paid cash for our drinks at the bar. Hotel lobby nice (but noisy at night) - rooms dated and in need of modernising, although appeared clean and well stocked (shampoo, hand lotion, shower gel, shower cap, sanitary disposal bags etc). Reception staff spoke good English. 6 minutes taxi ride from station but taxis few and far between/long wait. Collapse
Comfortable and very well placed for lakeside

We had just 3 nights in Desenzano and were very pleased with Hotel Oliveto. We had a family room with double bed and 2 bunks - plenty of space in the room. Very good breakfasts. The hotel is about 15 minutes walk from the town on the north side but only 5 minutes from the Lido (public beach). Note on electrics. The room only had type L sockets (three pins in-line). Italy uses two plug types: L and F (two pins with earth strip on the side). Much of Europe uses just F. Collapse
Sorry... But what a dump. Avoid at all costs!

The button to flush the toilet was covered with brown smear and when flushing leaks a brown liquid. Horrible. Shame on the owner. Collapse
Much room for improvement, good wine list though

We had a four night stay as part of the Inghams Lake Garda Highlights holiday. On arrival our room wasn't ready and we were asked to leave our bags in a cupboard in the entrance area. Not secure, but the place wasn't busy so felt safe enough. It's a 10-15 minute level walk into town and 5 minutes away from the nearest bar or restaurant. Staff on reception were friendly. We came back after a couple of hours having had lunch and were checked in. All well and good apart from the fact that we were not given a room of the standard for which we had paid. This was quickly remedied and we got room 312 with wonderful lake views. The room was spacious, but dated. The air con had a mind of its own and was unreliable. Housekeeping was a bit haphazard but the room was clean. Faulty bulbs were not replaced and we had a shoebox sit on top of the wardrobe from when we arrived until we left. The whole place needs to have some money spent on it and it could be quite good if that happens. The swimming pool area is pleasant as is the pool itself. Towels for the pool cost €3 each unless you bring your own. The bar area is ok, but the barman is excellent and very friendly and helpful. The dining room is a bit of a disaster apart from the fact that Mimo the head waiter is a very nice man and the wine list is top value. The waiting staff are helpful and polite but the general food quality is woeful. The chef is clearly working to a tight budget and this theme runs through the hotel. There is no chilled serving area in the restaurant so food that should be cold just sits out getting warm. I could go on and on, but you have probably got a good feel for this hotel from what I have written already. Collapse

A late booking only 5 days before the trip meant we had quite limited choices. We chose this hotel because we would like to live near the beach but still not in the city. Ok room with a small alcove with an extra bed. 5 minutes walk to starnden and 10 minutes to city. Big nice pool with plenty of space. Good with locked parking outside the hotel. A good middle class hotel and about what we expected. Collapse
