To be honest when we first arrived I was not sure if we would enjoy our visit. It initially felt a bit staid and old fashioned. A bit of a rabbit warren of corridors in an old house. However it must be said that the hotel quickly won us over and we enjoyed our two day stay a lot. It was clean and comfortable with excellent service. Unusually these days they seemed to have a lot of staff (who were also all very pleasant and helpful) so there was always someone on hand to serve or assist. We used both the Bistro and restaurant and the food was excellent in both. Not the cheapest of places to stay or eat but not unreasonable for the quality and service. Will probably go back. Collapse

We chose this hotel & spa to stay for our Pearl Wedding Anniversary after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor. We wanted somewhere in the country, either in the Lake District or just on the outskirts and this hotel seemed to tick boxes with its offers and reviews on Tripadvisor. This Country hotel is set within beautiful countryside and has 30 bedrooms. Most of the staff here were polite , friendly and helpful. Our bedroom was ready early than expected so we were shown round prior to taking our cases to our room. One of the main plus points this hotel has in its favour is the food - which is of fantastic quality. There is a great choice plus you can choose to dine in the Restaurant or Bistro. Our package (which we booked online) including a three course meal in the Restaurant plus breakfasts - which when purchased as a package, offers excellent value for money. Our package also included 3 hours in the spa and we had booked for a couple of treatments for after our time in spa. The ladies spa changing room had a communal changing area plus at least a couple of private cubicles with curtains and two private showers (with shampoo etc). We were provided with a towel (for using to shower afterwards), a robe and some flip flops. Smaller towels were available for drying off whilst in the spa area and they had bags for wet swimwear. The spa lockers work electronically by entering your choice of a 4 digit code twice so no need for any coins. Some lockers were faulty so check first before putting your belongings inside. The spa itself has a fantastic 'infinity' hydrotherapy pool for relaxing in, with hydrojets etc and there is an Aroma salt inhalation room (which was wonderful - not too hot). The footspa's, steam room & sauna followed on. There are a couple of outdoor spa baths too and some chairs to relax in at the front of the pool. Drinks can be ordered at the spa reception, though water is provided in the spa area for hydration. The only thing that spoiled this experience for us was that despite it being hotel policy that guests don't use their mobile phones in the spa area, there were people still doing this and they weren't even challenged about it by the staff. What is the point of having a no mobile phones in spa area policy that is ignored because staff are bothered about confronting guests who ignore it? We felt this was not only an invasion of privacy (especially if they are used in the changing areas) but also a health and safety concern. Also we learned that someone had dropped their mobile when in the sauna and it had fallen through the slats - yet still nobody was being challenged by the staff it seems - so no lessons learnt. One member of staff at the spa reception seemed rather disinterested when my husband mentioned about people using mobiles, saying she didn't make the rules, without realising that it was actually in the hotel rules (within the spa information booklet in the rooms). We mentioned our concerns at the main reception when we were leaving so hopefully this issue has now been addressed. Perhaps (as we suggested) its been added to the terms & conditions of use that guests have to sign prior to entering the spa. Our spa treatments (face & body sensation and freestyle muscle massage) which we had booked were excellent, with a couple of well trained spa therapists - though really we should have been offered a change of robes and clean towels downstairs at the spa reception before going upstairs for our treatments, which were just after our time in the Aqua Thermal Spa. I had changed into a dry swimsuit for my treatment but I had to sit waiting in the relaxation room upstairs for my massage, with a wet towel around me which I had used after my shower. The Garden View hotel room we stayed in was basic (a bit outdated), but clean, bright and airy with a great over the bath shower - though the bed was not so comfy. We had an issue with their being no water at one point, but this was quickly resolved and was due to the water being switched off in the kitchen whilst some work was being done. Thankfully neither of us was having a shower at the time. In the bar area, they were promoting some interesting guest gins, but when I tried to order one, they hadn't any left and not a great range of tonics to go with the gin they had got in (hint - some without quinine pair better with some gins). So we ordered a couple of ales and sat outside in the garden for a short time - admiring the view over the hills. Collapse

This was our second visit to the Manor and while the accommodation was as clean and comfortable as previously and the staff were as welcoming and efficient, we felt the place had lost something in its conviviality and easy-going informality. Frankly the little extras for the use of things like the pool table etc. were just penny pinching and we were surprised to discover that having paid a significant amount for two-night accommodation, use of the Spa was not included. The Spa generally dominated too much in the general feel of things. Additionally, while we recognise that quality comes at a cost, we felt that most of the food and drink was overpriced and we were therefore discouraged from eating-in. One small quibble is the allowing of smoking on the garden terrace. It meant that if we opened the patio-doors onto the terrace we had to put up with the pollution of those who had other rooms along the terrace. All in all, disappointing, which is a shame because we did so enjoy our first visit and that’s why we came back. Collapse
