Reykjavik is not a big city and the town center is actually quite small. Apotek is located right in the center. There are countless restaurants around the hotel, the main shopping street is 5 minutes away and generally many sights are in 10-15 minute walk. We did several tours which pick people up on their hotel. In that process we saw some of the other hotels in city. Some of them, including some leading chains (like Hilton) were really outside or located in areas that looked like industrial zones. This can be quite inconvenient if you plan to walk around in the city or even just around the hotel. So I would strongly recommend to check the location of your hotel and surrounding area before booking. Apotek is perfect in that respect. Apotek is a small hotel (probably around 40 rooms or so) in an old pharmacy. We had room 509 which was great with very high ceilings, good size and a sofa in addition to the bed. The staff was generally very friendly and helpful in the few interactions we had including during our very late check-in at 1:30. Breakfast is fine and, given the high prices in Iceland, relatively cheap (25 EUR per person). You will not be able to find much cheaper elsewhere so consider booking your accommodation with breakfast. Overall we enjoyed our stay at Apotek and would return if we happen to be again in Iceland. I have been to Reykjavik eight times in eight years, and I have stayed at various places. Apotek is a cut above. My request for a quiet, high floor room was met. I had nice city views, and the room itself was upscale and simple. The bathroom products are fabulous (I never review lotions, etc.!). The front desk staff were professional and friendly. Location. Across the street from the grocery store, the post office and the best ATM machine. A quick walk to City Hall, to Harpa, and to all that downtown has to offer. I will stay there again for sure. THANK YOU! Collapse

Stayed here for two nights after stopping in for a drink and dinner last year (dinner was great). Some things were good, some not so much Front desk staff during the day - very helpful in recommending places to eat, tours, etc. Seemed like they might have been recommending places they knew people as opposed to a reasonable place. Ex - they recommended something an hour away instead of 4 spots within a 20 min drive...we specifically asked for “close” Rooms - nice size and clean. But...noisy, my last night when I wanted to sleep a little I could here music outside blasting to exactly 4am. It was awful and I was a zombie the next day. Bar - it’s unbelievably expensive and the service is not great. Everything is expensive in Iceland and in the capital but I was getting charged almost 40 USD for 2 vodkas and like I said the service was not great. I was constantly looking around waiting for my bill, waiter, etc... you can’t even go down to your own hotels bar without getting hit with a huge bill and waiting. Breakfast - if you don’t get a good room, you have to pay, the. It costs the same as a good room because it’s 25 bucks for breakfast. Then...if you wants something like a cappuccino at breakfast they actually charge you another 5 dollars after you paid 25. It’s really absurd. The breakfast was ok but it wasn’t amazing, the 3 other hotels had better breakfast. Plus if you have an early flight you can’t even eat breakfast. Like I said I wanted to like it but as the 2 days went on I enjoyed the hotel less and less. Won’t be back. Other hotels at this price that are nicer in city that I’ve stayed at that are better. Our first time in Reykjavik, and our stay was memorable. Lovely hotel, room very comfortable, good bathroom. The reception staff couldn't have been either nicer or more helpful - particularly with restaurant recommendations. The only minor negative is from the slightly lacklustre breakfast buffet. Don't get me wrong, we we well fed, but some of the items looked a little...tired and it didn't match the quality of the rest of the experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Collapse
