A & O Hamburg City So you can either sleep in a dormitory or have your own private room. I stayed in a private room that had 4-empty-beds. Two single-beds and one bunk-bed. The firm, and comfortable mattress in the bunk-beds were 100% better compared to the single-beds, which instead were very, very soft. Also, the room I stayed in had curtains but they were not thick enough to make the room dark. So if you like your room dark either during the day or night, this hotel is not for you. The continental breakfast was okay - there were no hot items to be had. Reception staff are friendly; and they speak okay English. Overall, I thought the property was good in terms of not being noisy - there was hardly any noise coming from outside as well. The hotel’s location is okay as well, the Berliner Tor train station is within 5-minute walk and the train S1 takes you there from the airport. If the property had thicker curtains and the single beds were of good, firm quality I would perhaps stay there again. Also, the WI-FI connection is fast, which I liked. Collapse

For a short night, it is very affordable. I have booked one single room for one adult. It is very clean, quite, warm room in a cold Hamburg. I have enough space to sleep and refresh myself. The check in time is really strict, not flexible. In my case, it is fine. I have enough time to wait. You may check in onwards 15.00, you have to pay for early check in. The location is very strategic nearby main station and bus station. Collapse
Checked out 4 days early to stay in an air BnB

A warning to anyone who only speaks English thinking of travelling to Hamburg - don't. Anyone over the age of around 40 will not speak to you or even acknowledge you. If you need help with anything, best to speak to the youngest person you can find. Most unwelcoming place I have ever visited. My hostel room was filled with men who were 40+ and I had the unfortunate experience of walking into my room to see one completely naked in the middle of the room who kept saying he was there to pick up girls. I checked out immediately after this. I felt extremely unsafe leaving this hostel any time after 5pm and the walk to the nearest food store is at least 5-10 minutes. The only thing that was ok was the rooms and the wifi. As a 21 year old solo female traveler, I would not recommend this to anyone of a similar demographic. Collapse
A basic hostel of low quality

The stuff was very friendly and helpful, the rooms were clean, wifi was ok, the location is good if you want free parking and there is also metro and railway very close. On the contrary, the hotel/hostel was not clean in general. Have in mind though that we stayed there during a period that was super busy (the hotel bar and reception places were constantly full of people, ranging from students to families). One of the elevators was out of order, which was not comfortable as we were staying in the 7th floor. I think it is overpriced for what it offers. Collapse
Very well priced and reasonably run hotel

The A&O Hamburg City is fairly close to town centre, it's walkable, but better to catch the rail services just around the corner (Berliner Tor). This is a reasonable budget hotel by any standards, but they are amazingly cheap. I paid €97 for 3 nights, so €33 per night. Breakfast are extra at €7. Everything you might want for a budget stay is here. My room had basic facilities, but they were fine and everything clean. So, bed, bed linen, duvet, towels, windows opened, quiet when shut, big radiator, shelving, table, chair, locks worked well, free wifi (do-able), shower room clean, it drained properly (hurrah), liquid soap for both wash basin and shower, plastic cups, female hygiene things, plenty of hot water. They do basic housekeeping each day (empty rubbish, quick wipe over etc). Breakfast are in a large, clean refectory and all you can eat. German of course - rolls, cheeses, meats, yogurts, fruit, coffees, teas. In the hotel in general there are lots of common areas with bags of seating, a large bar area, adequately stocked. The bar isn't expensive. There are several lifts and they work after a fashion. Mainly this place is aimed at students and 20 somethings. For me as an old man, I loved being in among all that youthful energy and optimism. Reception was slow, you'd be wise to avoid busy hours. Collapse
