Bruges Short Break-Highly Reccomended!

Stay Date: 29/12/06, a customer from Tyne and Wear who stayed at 4* Hotel Navarra Bruges in Bruges wrote this review.

Bruges is a beautiful medieval city and fantastic for a short break as its pretty compact and centred around the huge, central Markt Square. We walked the main shopping streets on day one and hired See More  Read more information cycles on day two which was a fantastic way to explore the canals and parks which criss cross the city. Theres loads of cycle paths and hire is very reasonable-around 12 euro a day. If you can facethe climb, the Belfry Tower in Markt Square is well worth a visit for the fantastic views across the city and beyond, but be warned the stairs are very steep at the top! We also went ice skating in thesquare, which ws great fun and again, very reasonably priced.Sadly, the Christmas market was a real disappointment but the shopping in the city centre made up for this-there are some brilliantchildrens and toy shops plus all the major European brands. Theres an abundance of places to eat and drink-tea rooms selling hot drinks and snacks and plenty of restaurants- even a Pizza Hut! I did noticea lack of fast food places, but to be honest, that was quite refreshing! All in al I'd highly recommend the place for couples, families or singles and I intend to return in the Spring.   Collapse  Hide

A Few Days In Bruges

Short Stay in Bruges

Stay Date: 17/03/08, a customer from Midlothian who stayed at 3* Olympia Hotel in Bruges wrote this review.

Ferry looked as though it had been decorated in the 70's and not touched since, but it was good fun. We were the youngest onboard though! (23-24yrs). Meal onboard (buffet) was very disappointing and See More  Read more information definately not worth the money. However, staff were friendly and helpful, and a good time was had by all! Hotel Olympia - great location, a short walk into the centre of town. We arrived on a Monday- would have been good to have been told that everything in Bruges is shut on a Monday!! If travelling back on the same night, strongly recommend not spending a Monday in Bruges - little to do/see.Tuesday much better - plenty of museums, shops and cafes to visit. Horse and Cart trips are apprently a rip off so avoid them! Plenty of places to eat - slightly harder for vegetarians to get variety. Overall a good trip, with minor flaws. Very good value for money. The other members of our group hada twin room but the beds were pushed together - this was easily solved by rearranging the furniture a little and they then had seperate beds with a gap between. The buffet breakfast the next morningwas delicious and had a large variety of meats, breads, cereals, fruit and also cooked things i.e. streaky bacon and sausages! Short Break To Bruges

Stay Date: 07/12/09, a customer who stayed at 3* Hans Memling Hotel in Bruges wrote this review.

Ferry was great with buffet (all you can eat and there was a great choice) restaurant, piano bar, entertainment and several cafes. Decent size duty free shopping. Hotel was central. Room was clean See More  Read more information and very comfortable, adjustable heating, hairdryer, minibar (this was very expensive 5 euros for 25ml bottle of spirits) glad we took our own wine. Buffet breakfast had all you could want, staff couldnot do enough for us. We arrived from the ferry at approximately 9 o'clock and although you can not check in until 2 o'clock at the earliest there were facilities to store luggage. On leaving theroom at 11 am check out time, our luggage was left secure until we needed it at 4pm to return home. Bruges is a beautiful town especially with it being near Christmas the street decorations were veryimpressive. The Christmas market was an extra but not as good as markets we had visited at home. Bruges in general appeared to us to be expensive but well worth the visit-main courses were upwards of 15euros each. A lunchtime snack of one soup and one coffee was 15 euros.   Collapse  Hide

Lovely Holiday in Bruges

Stay Date: 28/10/12, a customer aged 18-24 who stayed at 3* Bryghia Hotel in Bruges wrote this review.

Had a lovely holiday at the Hotel Bryghia in Bruges. Hotel was lovely and spotlessly clean with a great location just 5 minutes walk from the market square and lovely views of the canal on one side See More  Read more information and pretty buildings and trees on the other. Lovely continental breakfast and friendly staff. Really enjoyed walking around the pretty cobbled streets and admiring the many beautiful churches. Alsovisited the Half maan brewery which had a fantastic tour, magnificat views over the city and amazing beer! The belfort tower also offered amazing views and was fascinating to see the bells working! Hada fantastic meal at Dell'Arte, just around the back of the market square, which offered delicious food (perfectly cooked steak!) At a more reasonable price than the main square, and very friendlyservice with complimentary bread and olives. Very highly recommended! We did have problems on some evenings finding reasonably priced restaurants that were open, especially on Monday when most of thetown seemed to close early! However, we found a fantastic cafe, Cafe de Kuppe, just off the market square, which had over 100 different beers, including my favourite, kwak, which comes in a fun glass, and fairly reasonable prices! We also spent a day in Ghent, which is only 20 minutes on a train from Bruges, and has a lovely old mediaeval centre, with a river and canals, and also had lots ofinteresting shops and cafes - great for a day out if you fancy a change! Overall lovely break in a lovely town. Would definitely go back, maybe in summer next time!   Collapse  Hide

Short Break in Brugge

Stay Date: 28/05/13, a customer aged 45-64 who stayed at 4* Hotel Navarra Bruges in Bruges wrote this review.

Stayed at the Navarra Hotel Brugge, excellent, what you would expect from this type of hotel, situated in the centre ,5 min. walk from main square, knew what to expect as we had stayed here See More  Read more information before. We visited Brussels , about a hour away by train, and Ostend, from here we used the coast tram to visit Blankenberge. We always buy a bus pass from the kiosk outside the railway station, e.g a 3 daypass costs 10 euro, and can be used on the tram if visiting Ghent and on the coast tram which runs the entire length of the coast, about 35 miles, besides on the bus in and around Brugge. There aredozens of bars in Brugge and it would be difficult to pick one out, I've not been in a bad one yet, it's best just to try.   Collapse  Hide

Bruges Mini-Break

Stay Date: 03/06/13, a customer aged 45-64 who stayed at 3* Koffieboontje in Bruges wrote this review.

From stepping on the Pride of Bruges P&O ferry at Hull on Monday afternoon, to arriving back again on the Friday morning, the minbreak was relaxing yet full of interest. We had been before in the See More  Read more information autumn time but particularly wanted to visit the city in mid-summer to experience the outdoor eating, drinking and sightseeing. We were not disappointed. The Koffieboontje Hotel we stayed at was only40m off the main square (Markt) and you can easily walk to any point within the canal ring within 20 minutes. We strolled along the canals, through green parks and along narrow streets with wonderfularchitecture. Over our 3 days in the city, we managed to cover almost all the major sights and attractions. We sampled a good selection of the array of local beers (some over 9%!) and even managed tofind a bar offering free beer one lunchtime! Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable 4 night break which we will look to repeat again in the not too distant future.   Collapse  Hide

Away From it All in Bruges

Stay Date: 18/06/13, a customer who stayed at 4* Hotel Navarra Bruges in Bruges wrote this review.

First, the Eurostar - brilliant, altogether very smooth journey from Manchester. Very pleased with Hotel Navarra, location, comfort, food, staff. Loved Bruges but found all the entrance fees of all See More  Read more information the places we would have liked to have visited added up to beyond our budget so we had to be selective. I was disappointed with St. John's Hospital because the medical history section was beingrevamped and was absent and there wasn't a notice until we were past the pay desk! We walked a great distance over the two days we were there and each street was a delight - very photogenic. It was worththe walk to the Lace Centre and Bruges Folk Museum which were off the beaten track. The Markt and Burg were very busy during the day with day trippers, so it paid to go out early. We visited theGroeningemuseum which was excellent and enjoyed the canal trip, although with the commentary in three languages we were past the object of interest before we knew what we were looking at! Bruges! A perfect weekend Excursion

Stay Date: 28/02/14, a customer aged 45-64 from Cambridge who stayed at 4* Hotel Academie in Bruges wrote this review.

I hadn't been to Bruges since I was a teenager on a school trip (a rather long time ago!) and so was looking forward to discovering the city with my partner, whose Christmas present this was. The See More  Read more information journey on Eurostar was smooth and efficient as always (definitely a more dignified way of travel compared with flying) and the connection in Brussels took us to Bruges in under an hour. It was justa short 10 minute walk from the railway station to our hotel, "Hotel Academie" in Wijngaardstraat, and from the moment we got there we were made to feel most welcome. The staff had out spacious roomall ready for us, so we were able to drop put bags and head out to explore straight away. Bruges is built on a decal making it perfect for strolling and walking, and it is worth turning off the mainstreets to meander down the side roads to absorb and enjoy the delightful 15th - 17th century Flemish architecture and the elegant waterways spanning the city. We had two delicious meals at theMaximillian restaurant just around the corner from the hotel. Eating out in Bruges, as in most major cities is not cheap, but many have a set menu at a more reasonable price. Breakfast at the hotel isfrom 7.30 till 10am and there is a plentiful supply of food, varying from cooked to cold buffet, breads, pastries and fruit. It's not fine dining, but there's loads to set you up for a good day'ssiteseeing. Everywhere we went we were shown friendliness, a smile and a warm welcome. We had a wonderful weekend and would recommend this as a destination to anyone.   Collapse  Hide

Fantastic time in Bruges

Stay Date: 21/12/14, a customer aged 45-64 who stayed at 4* Hotel Academie in Bruges wrote this review.

The hotel was plain fronted but in See More  Read more information keeping with other buildings but once inside it was a different matter!! The hotel is beautiful and great attention to detail is obvious. It is very classy with furnishings of a high qualitythroughout. The staff are brilliant and nothing is too much trouble. We we're given a card to enable us to get a 4€ discount at Ice Magic (each) and various discounts at lots of other attractions. Free WiFiwas also a bonus. The breakfast, mainly continental, was abundant and set in a lovely 'cellar' type room, plenty to eat to keep even the hungriest person going all day!! There is also a gym and fitnessfacilities along with beauty treatments, although we did not use these. The siting of the hotel was great for the coach drop off point from Zeebrugge, a lovely 7 minute stroll through Minnewaterpark. Also very near to some of the best restaurants we have found in Bruges on our previous visits were only minutes away, as was Half Moon brewery where not only can you purchase the renowned Zot beer, but also have a beautiful lunch. The Christmas markets are not huge but do have an ice rink. Chocolatiers galore and beautiful lace with the addition of splendid Belgium beers made this a wonderfulpre-Christmas break.   Collapse  Hide

Lovely weekend break in Bruges

Stay Date: 27/03/15, a customer aged 45-64 who stayed at 4* Grand Hotel Casselbergh Bruges in Bruges wrote this review.

We booked a Super Break weekend in Bruges staying at the Grand Hotel Casselbergh. It was one of the most enjoyable short breaks we have ever been on. We travelled all the way by train from The See More  Read more information Midlands, leaving on the 5am train and were in the centre of Bruges by lunchtime. All our trains ran perfectly on time and were very comfortable. We found our hotel easily having bought a guide book andmap and were pleased to find that it was very centrally located and easy to find. Nowhere is far away in Bruges and the walk from the station took about twenty minutes which gave us a chance to get afeel for the place on the way. Our first impressions of the hotel were good and only got better, it is beautifully decorated throughout, spotlessly clean and all the staff were extremely helpfuland polite. We could not fault it in any way and would definitely stay again if we go back to Bruges. There are two parts to the hotel, the old part with some beautiful old rooms which have loads ofcharacter and the new part of the hotel which has a more modern layout but is still in keeping with the rest of the building and is furnished and decorated to the same high standard. Our room was agood size with a huge bed and again was spotlessly clean with a view overlooking the canal. We were on the first floor but next time would ask for a room higher up to give a better view. The bathroomwas very nicely fitted out with everything you would expect, again it was spotless and had a fantastic shower. We only ate in the hotel for breakfast but it was very good and set us up for the day, there is fresh fruit and yogurts, cereals, cold meats and cheeses, a buffet style hot selection and a variety of fresh pastries along with bread to toast if you wish. Everything was beautifullyprepared and very tasty with something there to suit anyone's tastes. To drink there are fruit juices, tea, coffee, hot chocolate or probably anything else you might want, all served by very polite, friendly and efficient staff. We spent most of our time walking around as we wanted to see as much as possible and also took a boat trip which lasts about half an hour and cost us 8 euros. We felt thiswas good value and gave us a chance to see things from a different perspective. Other tours are available, the city tour in a mini bus and a horse and carriage ride around the streets. The latter cost44 euros and we felt this was a bit expensive and didn't give the chance to stop and look which is why we preferred to sightsee on foot although of course that's just our choice. We went up theBell Tower which again was 8 euros, there are 366 stairs to the top and are a spiral getting very narrow towards the top but once up there the views are well worth the effort. Coming down to earth againyou find yourselves in the Markt (Market Place) this is where most things seem to start and finish and you can get food or drinks from any number of bars/restaurants there however be careful aseating and drinking in the Markt can be very expensive and we found equally nice places in some of the back streets at a more reasonable cost. The first night we had a pizza in an Italian restaurant whichwas very pleasant but unfortunately I cant remember its name! The second night we had been recommended by a friend to eat at a grill, it was called Grill De Wijngaert in Wijngaardstraat. I have tosay that our meal here was superb, everything is cooked fresh on the grill and you can watch as the chef cooks it which is all part of the experience. I definitely recommend this place but if you wantto eat there you must book in advance as it is very popular and very small. Our last night we chose to eat at Maximiliiaan van Oostenrijk which is on Wijngaardplein. This is a very nice restaurantwhere we had superb service and beautiful food including the Flemish beef stew which many places serve, ours here at Maimilliaans large pieces of tender beef which just fell apart and melted in yourmouth. It was delicious! Sadly our stay was only short but we will definitely visit again, Bruges is a beautiful city and is very clean and tidy. All in all we could not fault our stay and wouldnot hesitate to recommend Bruges for weekend away.   Collapse  Hide

A romantic stay in Bruges.

Stay Date: 27/05/15, a customer aged 45-64 who stayed at 4* Hotel Navarra Bruges in Bruges wrote this review.

My wife and I went for a three day break in Bruges staying at the 4* Navarra Hotel. This was close to the central market place (3 mins walk) and had the added bonus of a basement swimming pool , gym See More  Read more information and sauna. The Hotel provided a full breakfast serving both cooked and continental (self service). Everything from the Navarra was within a maximum of 15 minutes walk. There is a horse and carriagethat you can hire for half an hour (44 euros) to have a tour of the city but you can just as easily walk the areas that they take you and then be able to explore the multiple chocolate and beer shops.A real must is to have a couple of local tour guide maps which are available at any hotel. Go a little out of the central market square and you'll find more reasonable eating places. If you are comingby train then please note that the roads and paths are cobbled which does make any suitcase fitted with wheels a little awkward to pull. Overall though a lovely clean city and a great mid week break.   Collapse  Hide

Brugge City Break

Stay Date: 22/06/15, a customer aged 45-64 who stayed at 4* Hotel Navarra Bruges in Bruges wrote this review.

A fantastic break with SuperBreak. We would use them again for sure. The whole holiday went without any hiccups. From Eurostar to the hotel it was well organised. Our room in Hotel Navarra was super See More  Read more information and the hotel's location was very central and yet in a quiet location. This made it easy to see all the sights. It had a great pool and gym. The staff were very friendly. The hotel was spotlesslyclean and in a good state of décor everywhere. It has a lovely jazz bar to sit and relax. The main thing to learn is to take change in Euros for the taxi from the station to the hotel as our driver saidhe had no change and we had no change either so we got ripped off. This is not a problem from SuperBreak I hasten to add. Also lots of cobbled areas in Brugge so where flat shoes. It is a place to seeboth in the summer and in the winter as it will have its own different charms depending on the season.   Collapse  Hide

Beautiful Bruges

Stay Date: 24/10/15, a customer aged 45-64 who stayed at 4* NH Brugge in Bruges wrote this review.

Visited Bruges with friends for my birthday, what an amazing weekend we had, Bruges is a such a beautiful place, stunning scenery and buildings. We stayed at the NH Bruges hotel which was gorgeous. See More  Read more information From the minute we walked in, the reception staff were extremely helpful. We were lucky enough to stay in a premier king size room which was huge and so was the bed - very clean, comfortable andexcellent quality furnishings, bed linen etc.,(the beverage tray was a little sparse with little coffee and no milk for the tea, we had to put our kettle on the floor to boil as the cable wouldn't reachthe socket from the table), but that's the only fault I can come up with. The breakfast was bountiful - everything you could wish for, well stocked and very well organised. 10/10 for reception staff, restaurant staff and cleaning staff. We would definitely try and book at the NH Bruges before considering anywhere else. We visited a few bars that we would certainly head for again. Jilles, Gran Kaffeede Passage, among others. Long weekend in Bruges

Stay Date: 08/04/17, a customer aged 45-64 who stayed at 4* Hotel Academie in Bruges wrote this review.

We visited Bruges as a party of 3 adults. Our trip allowed us 3 full days of site-seeing, which felt about right. We stayed in the Academie Hotel which is in a great location close to the See More  Read more information Minnewater. It is close to the main centre but in a fairly quiet location in a cobbled side street. It was an easy 10 minute walk from the railway station. The hotel is lovely. Rooms are of a good standard andwe had a view over the terrace bar. The staff were exceptionally friendly and all spoke good English. The buffet breakfast was fantastic with everything you could want, even sparkling wine. Bruges issmall and we walked everywhere and took in most of the sites. It is worth taking a boat trip which lasts a good half hour and takes you around the whole city via the canals. Several companies runthese trips, but the route and price is always the same. If you are interested in museums and churches, it is worth getting a museum pass at 20 euros. This lasts 3 days and gives entry to most of the mainattractions. It is worth going up the Belfrey for the fantastic view, but it is 366 steps up a narrow spiral staircase so not for the fainthearted. Bruges is very traditional and feels like a verysafe place to be. Everyone we met was friendly and helpful and we would recommend it as a relaxing destination for a short break.   Collapse  Hide
