Belgium Holiday Reviews

Manneken Pis, Brussels, Belgium

Belgium is renowned for its luxurious chocolate, unique beer, world-class art and fairytale castles. Enjoy a romantic canal cruise in Bruges or shop in Antwerp's exquisite diamond boutiques. Brussels offers diverse architectural styles and atmospheric nightlife in the stylish Art Nouveau grand cafes.

As well as flights, Belgium is well connected via the Eurostar network with direct trains from London to Brussels. From Brussels you can travel onwards to Bruges, Ghent and Ostend using local rail services. You can also travel to Belgium via P and O ferries with daily sailings from Hull to Zeebrugge.

  • Brussels is Belgium's largest city and also the capital but still retains a small town charm and a cosmopolitan atmosphere thanks to its mix of French and Flemish cultures. Don't miss the world-famous Mannekin Pis, the futuristic Atomium and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts.
  • Bruges also known as "the Venice of the North" is an historic and picturesque town close to the North Sea coast. Famous as a centre for trade and commerce during the Middle Ages, Bruges boasts magnificent medieval buildings such as the Church of our Lady who's tower gives incredible views across the town and beyond.
  • Antwerp is world-renowned for its trade in diamonds. Be sure to visit the Diamond Quarter which is a short walk from the city's main shopping streets. Antwerp is also famous as a centre of the arts with paintings by artists such as Rubens and van Dyck displayed in historic buildings and museums around the city.
Whether you choose to visit Brussels, Bruges or Antwerp or other Belgian towns such as Liege, Namur or Ostend; we're sure you'll love a SuperBreak to Belgium.

Short Break in Bruges

Stay Date: 11/12/06, a customer who stayed at 3* Olympia Hotel in Bruges wrote this review.

What a lovely town. Larger than you think and beautifully lit at Christmas time. Locals were very friendly and had a good sense of humour. The Olympia Hotel is a very lovely, family run, hotel. See More  Read more information Continental breaksfast was plentiful with a large selection. Shame it could not provide evening meals. Rooms were a good size and bed of a large size, possibly king sized. Very clean throughout. Receptionstaff very knowledgable and recommend good places to visit. Hotel is approx 15 minutes walk to centre of Bruges. Bruges can be visited on a day trip as it is only approx 1.5 hours from the ChannelTunnel. Excellent directions were given by Superbreak Holidays from the Channel Tunnel at Calais to the Hotel at Bruges. This Ice Sculpture exhibition outside the station at Brugge was fantastic. Wewould highly recommend a vist when this is on at Christmas time. If visiting this attraction wrap up warm as the inside of the venue is -6C and a cup of Hot Mulled wine was very welcome at the end ofthe displays at the 'Ice Bar' this year (2006) depicting a coral reef complete with seahorses holding up the bar counter, all in clear ice. Hotel Olympia staff recommended a day trip to Holland to atown called Sluis. On entering it looked very small but turned out to be a lovely day. Again locals very friendly and their command of english is excellent, better than our Dutch and French. Sluis isonly approx 15 miles from Brugge and about 30 mins drive at most. Quaint little town and excellent food.   Collapse  Hide

Bruges Short Break-Highly Reccomended!

Stay Date: 29/12/06, a customer from Tyne and Wear who stayed at 4* Hotel Navarra Bruges in Bruges wrote this review.

Bruges is a beautiful medieval city and fantastic for a short break as its pretty compact and centred around the huge, central Markt Square. We walked the main shopping streets on day one and hired See More  Read more information cycles on day two which was a fantastic way to explore the canals and parks which criss cross the city. Theres loads of cycle paths and hire is very reasonable-around 12 euro a day. If you can facethe climb, the Belfry Tower in Markt Square is well worth a visit for the fantastic views across the city and beyond, but be warned the stairs are very steep at the top! We also went ice skating in thesquare, which ws great fun and again, very reasonably priced.Sadly, the Christmas market was a real disappointment but the shopping in the city centre made up for this-there are some brilliantchildrens and toy shops plus all the major European brands. Theres an abundance of places to eat and drink-tea rooms selling hot drinks and snacks and plenty of restaurants- even a Pizza Hut! I did noticea lack of fast food places, but to be honest, that was quite refreshing! All in al I'd highly recommend the place for couples, families or singles and I intend to return in the Spring.   Collapse  Hide

Horse and Cart trips are apprently a rip off so avoid them! Plenty of places to eat - slightly harder for vegetarians to get variety. Overall a good trip, with minor flaws. Very good value for money. Would do trip again to another location.   Collapse  Hide

Lovely Holiday in Bruges

Stay Date: 28/10/12, a customer aged 18-24 who stayed at 3* Bryghia Hotel in Bruges wrote this review.

Lovely continental breakfast and friendly staff. Really enjoyed walking around the pretty cobbled streets and admiring the many beautiful churches. Alsovisited the Half maan brewery which had a fantastic tour, magnificat views over the city and amazing beer! The belfort tower also offered amazing views and was fascinating to see the bells working! Hada fantastic meal at Dell'Arte, just around the back of the market square, which offered delicious food (perfectly cooked steak!) At a more reasonable price than the main square, and very friendlyservice with complimentary bread and olives. Very highly recommended! We did have problems on some evenings finding reasonably priced restaurants that were open, especially on Monday when most of thetown seemed to close early! However, we found a fantastic cafe, Cafe de Kuppe, just off the market square, which had over 100 different beers, including my favourite, kwak, which comes in a fun glass, and fairly reasonable prices! We also spent a day in Ghent, which is only 20 minutes on a train from Bruges, and has a lovely old mediaeval centre, with a river and canals, and also had lots ofinteresting shops and cafes - great for a day out if you fancy a change! Overall lovely break in a lovely town. Would definitely go back, maybe in summer next time!   Collapse  Hide

Beautiful Bruges!

Stay Date: 12/11/12, a customer aged 25-44 from Hitchin who stayed at 4* Hotel Navarra Bruges in Bruges wrote this review.

My husband and I have just returned from a three night stay at the Hotel Navarra and I have to admit our visit was close to perfect. The Eurostar journey was simple and relaxing, the transfer to See More  Read more information Bruges from Brussels was straight forward. The location of the hotel is fantastic, two minutes walk from the main square. The d?cor is contemporary and understated. The rooms are clean, modern and haveeverything you could need in them. The breakfast was delicious, pastries, toast, cheeses, ham, boiled and scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, mushrooms and beans, plus fruit and yoghurts etc. The bar on anevening was very relaxing and they have a pianist playing on a Saturday and Wednesday. We really enjoyed using the pool and there is also a gym and sauna. But the best thing by far at this hotel werethe staff, friendly, helpful, efficient and most of all professional. It makes a refreshing change to be greeted with a can do attitude. I would highly recommend this hotel and hope to get the chanceto revisit it myself.   Collapse  Hide

Our visit to Bruges

Stay Date: 24/11/12, a customer aged 25-44 who stayed at 4* Hotel Academie in Bruges wrote this review.

From our train trip from Edinburgh to Hull, the overnight stay on the ferry,to arriving at our hotel in Bruges - we had the most amazing trip! As foot passengers on the ferry you can get the bus See More  Read more information from Hull Station even though the paperwork may say otherwise you won't miss the last check in time. The bus is run by P&O so is all tied in together. When we were dropped off in Bruges it took a coupleof minutes looking at a local map to find our Hotel the Academie - very central and superb hotel - and took us 15 minutes to walk there. This hotel was a recommendation by Superbreak and for 4 star inthe centre of Bruges fantastic value for money. The hotel is one of the nicest hotels we've stayed at. The buffet breakfast was fresh and plentiful, enough to kick start any day! We spent a coupleof days wandering round the city, at the markets, local eateries and bars. Short Break in Bruges

Stay Date: 26/11/12, a customer aged 65+ from Eastbourne who stayed at 4* Grand Hotel Casselbergh Bruges in Bruges wrote this review.

This was a great hotel, very comfortable and good value. It is centrally situated to the Market Square, and was a great base from which to explore the city. The Casselbergh Hotel has an ambiance of See More  Read more information luxury, with traditional furnishings and comfort to a very high standard. There are a number of secluded public areas in a series of interlinked rooms, offering a choice of seating areas. We werethere as a group of 4, and had no problem finding a cosy corner each evening, at the same time feeling very much part of the relaxed atmosphere of the hotel. Our standard room was perfect, large, comfortable and always warm (we were there in November), with superb bathroom with shower and separate bath. We would look forward to returning. We arrived by car, and our only difficulty was manoeuvringour car from the narrow street into the hotel's underground car park via the vehicle lift. However, having done it once, I would have no qualms about next time, and it was certainly worth the 20euros/night for peace of mind. All part of the adventure of a few days in Bruges. The hotel is very convenient to Markt Square, where we spent most of our time, with Christmas Market and ice skating toadd to the atmosphere in the evening - a real fairytale scene. The Ice Sculpture Festival close to the main station was also well worth the visit (open until 6th Jan'13).   Collapse  Hide

Great 2 nights in Bruges

Stay Date: 14/02/13, a customer aged 45-64 who stayed at 3* Koffieboontje in Bruges wrote this review.

We went as a family group of three couples. I was very anxious about the hotel after reading the reviews on trip advisor but it was absolutely fine. The location was perfect - just off the main See More  Read more information square - with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants! The room was clean, the bed was really comfortable and the buffet breakfast had plenty of choice. We were pleased to have tea and coffee makingfacilities in the room and a hairdryer in the bathroom as once again I came away without one! We found a couple of really good bars, one was called Tom's bar and served a huge amount of beers, the waiterwas very good at helping us choose especially us ladies. We found the fruit beers very refreshing and we even tasted champagne beer which was most enjoyable. The other bar was called Joey's cafe whereonce again the waiter was very helpful and had over 400 beers to choose from, needless to say we stayed a few hours. Cookies was another great find serving tapas, we chose the selection at a set price,it was excellent!!! We toured the brewery while we were there, that was a great way to spend an hour as you get a beer at the end of the tour.   Collapse  Hide

There was an Italian that we went to called Carlitos, the food was really good but found that once we had a beer and food they did not offer us anymoredrinks, coffee or even dessert and they were more interested in serving the locals than us. Bruges! A perfect weekend Excursion

Stay Date: 28/02/14, a customer aged 45-64 from Cambridge who stayed at 4* Hotel Academie in Bruges wrote this review.

I hadn't been to Bruges since I was a teenager on a school trip (a rather long time ago!) and so was looking forward to discovering the city with my partner, whose Christmas present this was. The See More  Read more information journey on Eurostar was smooth and efficient as always (definitely a more dignified way of travel compared with flying) and the connection in Brussels took us to Bruges in under an hour. It was justa short 10 minute walk from the railway station to our hotel, "Hotel Academie" in Wijngaardstraat, and from the moment we got there we were made to feel most welcome. The staff had out spacious roomall ready for us, so we were able to drop put bags and head out to explore straight away. Bruges is built on a decal making it perfect for strolling and walking, and it is worth turning off the mainstreets to meander down the side roads to absorb and enjoy the delightful 15th - 17th century Flemish architecture and the elegant waterways spanning the city. We had two delicious meals at theMaximillian restaurant just around the corner from the hotel. Eating out in Bruges, as in most major cities is not cheap, but many have a set menu at a more reasonable price. Breakfast at the hotel isfrom 7.30 till 10am and there is a plentiful supply of food, varying from cooked to cold buffet, breads, pastries and fruit. It's not fine dining, but there's loads to set you up for a good day'ssiteseeing. Everywhere we went we were shown friendliness, a smile and a warm welcome. We had a wonderful weekend and would recommend this as a destination to anyone.   Collapse  Hide

Brussels City Break

Stay Date: 29/03/14, a customer aged 45-64 from Stockton-On-Tees who stayed at 4* Crowne Plaza Brussels in Brussels wrote this review.

Our hotel (Crowne Plaza, Brussels) was situated in the city centre. The hotel was very clean, the bed rooms adequately equipped and the evening menu creative. The main shopping centre was within a short distance of the hotel; other attractions such as the Grand Place and the little boy statute were about 15 mins walk away. Many attractions are accessiblethis way such as the Parliamentarium and the Atominum. One of the highlights of our trip was seeing the Chinese President and his entourage arrive at the Sheraton Hotel, which was opposite. Tip: ifyou want to buy bottled Belgian beer, check out the Carrefour 'local' shop near the Grand Place. The price is very reasonable. For example some of the Leffe beers were almost twice the price in anearby specialist Belgian beer shop!   Collapse  Hide

Fantastic time in Bruges

Stay Date: 21/12/14, a customer aged 45-64 who stayed at 4* Hotel Academie in Bruges wrote this review.

Took a ferry from Hull to Bruges and spent 2 nights at the Hotel Academie. Had stayed at other hotels in Bruges before but not this one. We will be staying again!! The hotel was plain fronted but in See More  Read more information keeping with other buildings but once inside it was a different matter!! The hotel is beautiful and great attention to detail is obvious. It is very classy with furnishings of a high qualitythroughout. The staff are brilliant and nothing is too much trouble. We we're given a card to enable us to get a 4€ discount at Ice Magic (each) and various discounts at lots of other attractions. Free WiFiwas also a bonus. The breakfast, mainly continental, was abundant and set in a lovely 'cellar' type room, plenty to eat to keep even the hungriest person going all day!! There is also a gym and fitnessfacilities along with beauty treatments, although we did not use these. The siting of the hotel was great for the coach drop off point from Zeebrugge, a lovely 7 minute stroll through Minnewaterpark. Also very near to some of the best restaurants we have found in Bruges on our previous visits were only minutes away, as was Half Moon brewery where not only can you purchase the renowned Zot beer, but also have a beautiful lunch. The Christmas markets are not huge but do have an ice rink. Chocolatiers galore and beautiful lace with the addition of splendid Belgium beers made this a wonderfulpre-Christmas break.   Collapse  Hide

Lovely weekend break in Bruges

Stay Date: 27/03/15, a customer aged 45-64 who stayed at 4* Grand Hotel Casselbergh Bruges in Bruges wrote this review.

We booked a Super Break weekend in Bruges staying at the Grand Hotel Casselbergh. It was one of the most enjoyable short breaks we have ever been on. We travelled all the way by train from The See More  Read more information Midlands, leaving on the 5am train and were in the centre of Bruges by lunchtime. All our trains ran perfectly on time and were very comfortable. We found our hotel easily having bought a guide book andmap and were pleased to find that it was very centrally located and easy to find. Nowhere is far away in Bruges and the walk from the station took about twenty minutes which gave us a chance to get afeel for the place on the way. Our first impressions of the hotel were good and only got better, it is beautifully decorated throughout, spotlessly clean and all the staff were extremely helpfuland polite. We could not fault it in any way and would definitely stay again if we go back to Bruges. There are two parts to the hotel, the old part with some beautiful old rooms which have loads ofcharacter and the new part of the hotel which has a more modern layout but is still in keeping with the rest of the building and is furnished and decorated to the same high standard. Our room was agood size with a huge bed and again was spotlessly clean with a view overlooking the canal. We were on the first floor but next time would ask for a room higher up to give a better view. The bathroomwas very nicely fitted out with everything you would expect, again it was spotless and had a fantastic shower. We only ate in the hotel for breakfast but it was very good and set us up for the day, there is fresh fruit and yogurts, cereals, cold meats and cheeses, a buffet style hot selection and a variety of fresh pastries along with bread to toast if you wish. Everything was beautifullyprepared and very tasty with something there to suit anyone's tastes. To drink there are fruit juices, tea, coffee, hot chocolate or probably anything else you might want, all served by very polite, friendly and efficient staff. We spent most of our time walking around as we wanted to see as much as possible and also took a boat trip which lasts about half an hour and cost us 8 euros. We felt thiswas good value and gave us a chance to see things from a different perspective. Other tours are available, the city tour in a mini bus and a horse and carriage ride around the streets. The latter cost44 euros and we felt this was a bit expensive and didn't give the chance to stop and look which is why we preferred to sightsee on foot although of course that's just our choice. We went up theBell Tower which again was 8 euros, there are 366 stairs to the top and are a spiral getting very narrow towards the top but once up there the views are well worth the effort. Coming down to earth againyou find yourselves in the Markt (Market Place) this is where most things seem to start and finish and you can get food or drinks from any number of bars/restaurants there however be careful aseating and drinking in the Markt can be very expensive and we found equally nice places in some of the back streets at a more reasonable cost. The first night we had a pizza in an Italian restaurant whichwas very pleasant but unfortunately I cant remember its name! The second night we had been recommended by a friend to eat at a grill, it was called Grill De Wijngaert in Wijngaardstraat. I have tosay that our meal here was superb, everything is cooked fresh on the grill and you can watch as the chef cooks it which is all part of the experience. I definitely recommend this place but if you wantto eat there you must book in advance as it is very popular and very small. Our last night we chose to eat at Maximiliiaan van Oostenrijk which is on Wijngaardplein. This is a very nice restaurantwhere we had superb service and beautiful food including the Flemish beef stew which many places serve, ours here at Maimilliaans large pieces of tender beef which just fell apart and melted in yourmouth. It was delicious! Sadly our stay was only short but we will definitely visit again, Bruges is a beautiful city and is very clean and tidy. All in all we could not fault our stay and wouldnot hesitate to recommend Bruges for weekend away.   Collapse  Hide

Brugge City Break

The main thing to learn is to take change in Euros for the taxi from the station to the hotel as our driver saidhe had no change and we had no change either so we got ripped off. This is not a problem from SuperBreak I hasten to add. Also lots of cobbled areas in Brugge so where flat shoes.
