Relaxing Bithday Treat

Stay Date: 13/11/11, a customer who stayed at 4* Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa (2 Night Offer & 1st Night Dinner) in Bowness-on-Windermere wrote this review.

Luckily we live not far from the beatuiful lake district so have been on many occasions for a day out. This time however we stayed in a lovely hotel and enjoyed the lakes in luxury. The view at See More  Read more information breakfast down the lake was spectacular and each morning the staff were at pains to seat us in order to get the best view. The staff were very helpful and friendly both in the restaurant and at reception. We swam in the beautiful pool (also with views of the lake) before breakfast and used the sauna and steam room. Parking was restricted close to the hotel but we managed to find a space and didn'trequire the valet parking offered by the hotel. In order not to use the car we visited ambleside by boat instead and had a thoughrouly relaxing sail approx 40 min with wonderful scenery much better thantravelling by road. It was a 10min walk into ambleside passing hayes garden centre on the way. Wonderful christmas display and well worth a look. Visited the art gallery on church street nr salutationhotel. The handblown glass is beautiful. Another day we revisited a walk around tarn hows still beautiful and an easy walk taking about an hour on the flat (you can make it more difficult by headingup on to the tops). My only complaint was the cost of the car park, £4 for two hours. It used to be free 20 yrs ago!! we then dropped down into hawkshead looked around the shops and galleries. Apicture book spot. Had some mulled wine in the pub there, just the thing on a winters night and then returned to bowness for a meal in hyltons restaurant. The crab starter was excellent. Called at kendalfor a bit more shopping on the way home. All in all a wonderful break.   Collapse  Hide

Holiday Inn

Stay Date: 20/11/11, a customer who stayed at 3* Holiday Inn Lancaster (2 Night Offer & 1st Night Dinner) in Lancaster wrote this review.

Room was clean and more than expected. Staff were polite and helpful. Included in the break was breakfast (buffet) and one nights dinner (3 course) which was really good and the choice was good too. See More  Read more information Hotel was situated in a really good location to all attractions (each approx 30/40 min drive away from hotel). Had a fantastic day on the lake, boat ride from lakeside to bowness (lovely small townwith shops, resturants, beatrix potter world etc) and then in the evening drove to blackpool which was very disapointing. Thought the lights would have been up and turned on and the only thing openwere amuseuments, bars and clubs. Wouldn't rush back! then on the way home stopped off at fleetwood outlet, which we walked round in less than an hour as the shops were not great! but overall had areally good weekend and would visit the lakes again and would stay in the holiday inn.   Collapse  Hide

Winter Wonderland In Grasmere

Stay Date: 05/02/12, a customer from Uk who stayed at 3* Macdonald Swan Hotel (2 Night Offer & 1st Night Dinner) in Grasmere wrote this review.

On a two night break, arriving on friday afternoon. Excellent dinner in hotel - wonderful venison pudding. Saturday walk round grasmere lake setting off from the hotel in cold - half way round See More  Read more information looking like snowmen. There are lots of walks to do direct from the hotel and your car could be left in the car park unused as there are plenty of eating/drinking places in grasmere village which was snowcovered as we passed through and we were unable to see friends' 'bricks' in the wordsworth garden. View from window on return to hotel a complete winter picture postcard scene of the mountains. We hadplanned to walk back into grasmere on saturday night for some live music but had dinner in hotel due to depth of snow (also excellent with lamb to die for) - met a couple who were stranded and had tostay the night in b and b nearby. Sunday morning sunny and snow covered so had a cruise at bowness on windermere in one of the many lake steamers/crafts which was truly magical - misty and broody oneminute, bright sunshine bouncing off the mountains the next. Pleased we were well wrapped up though! the downside to the weekend was that the room we were allocated on arrival was stone cold. Themanager - jason - tried unsuccessfully to rectify and we were given the room immediately above which was warm (same beautiful views of the mountains). The hotel itself is a little 'tired' and bothbathrooms could have done with an update. On saturday evening the fire in the bar went out and was not relit for a few hours (and only after we had complained that no one would want to stay in there becauseit was so cold) so our plans for a bar meal (interesting menu) were scuppered and we had to eat in the restaurant. Apart from that, all the staff were friendly and very hard working - there was awedding party and their guests staying for the weekend so quite busy compared to our last stay here last year. However, the whole weekend was relaxing and the aforementioned problems did not dampen ittoo much.   Collapse  Hide
