About Mary Rose Museum & Portsmouth Historic Dockyard
A fantastic day out for the entire family, Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard is endlessly fascinating; be awe-struck by the impressive might of the iron-hulled HMS Warrior, the world’s oldest commissioned warship the HMS Victory, and discover the incredible history of Henry VIII’s ship The Mary Rose, its sinking and the artefacts recovered from its wreckage in the depths of the sea. Opened in 2013 after a £35million investment, the Mary Rose Museum houses the most extraordinary objects of the 19,000 recovered from the wreck site to date – offering a fantastic insight into Tudor life, the museum is not to be missed by history buffs of all ages.
Once you’ve explored the decks on board the vessels, be sure to get a sailor’s eye view of the humongous ships on a harbour tour of the Historic Dockyard. Challenge yourself too at one of the many ‘Action Stations’ and have a go at Britain’s tallest climbing wall to appreciate the rigours of training that Royal Navy Personnel are put through. No trip to Portsmouth is complete without a trip to the National Museum of the Royal Navy, an excellent place to round off your jam-packed day.
With so much to see and do around the waterfront and plenty of cafés and restaurants onsite – including the fabulous Georgian Tea Rooms and the excellent Boathouse No. 7 Restaurant – the whole family can spend the day exploring everything the Dockyard has to offer.
