My family and I recently visited Chessington (which we were all looking forward to) and unfortunately the experience fell well below not only our standards but also, I’m sure the standards that Merlin Entertainments supposedly sets itself. It was honestly such a dreadful trip that I don’t know where to begin with this email, but I will start from the beginning. We booked our trip over the phone after speaking to various people over the phone, we finally spoke to someone who seemed helpful and knew what he was talking about….or so we thought. We had it confirmed on numerous occasions that the park would be open on both of the days we had booked & yet surprise surprise it wasn’t. How on earth can a member of staff not see on the booking site that the park was in fact not open on the 20th & still be able to book a family in to the park? You can imagine the huge disappointment when we found out through our own research (the night before our trip) that the park wasn’t going to be open, especially after being charged an extortionate amount for the Gruffalo themed room. After making a complaint about this to customer service they reviewed the telephone conversation and called us back to confirm that it was in fact an error on the member of staffs’ part and that we would be entitled to a refund of £65.25….which in my mind is a ridiculous settlement after all the upset and emotional torment for my 4yr olds birthday surprise. Also, after listening back to the telephone conversations the member of staff also confirmed that they would contact the hotel to make sure they made a fuss for my 4yr olds birthday with a birthday pack in the room with balloons etc as a gesture of good will…. I think you know whats coming up? Yes, the hotel knew nothing about it and not for the 1st time on this trip I had another extremely disappointed child. But what bothered me most was the lack of emotion and quite frankly the “couldn’t care less” attitude that the hotel staff gave towards this issue. The one and only day we could actually get in the park was again extremely disappointing, thank god for the Gruffalo ride otherwise my child wouldn’t have gone on any rides. Chessington is made out to be a place for families and children of all ages, yet, there appeared to be a serious lack of rides or entertainment for children around my child’s age. Also, the distinct lack of knowledge of the staff at the park was increasingly frustrating as the day went on, nobody seemed to be able to point us in the right direction for rides and entertainment for the age group we needed. All we got told was to use the maps as they were the best guides…I think its about time Merlin/Chessington put some money in to training the staff with basic knowledge of the park. And as for these paper maps, they’re so badly illustrated and awful to read that we found ourselves walking around aimlessly most of the time trying to find our own way around. Once we finally got over the disappointment of the park day, it was time for the restaurant, which again was on the disappointing side. We were told a selection of gluten & dairy free options would be available, yet, there was one meal that my partner could have. This to me doesn’t seem like options, more like an option. Finally, after coming to terms with the fact that park wouldn’t be open, we decided to book in to the splash pool for the morning of the 2nd day before we left, and, you guessed it, it wasn’t open. Even though we booked it on the computer in the hotel that the hotel staff encourage you to use. How can it be possible to book something via something that the staff and hotel recommend you use and it actually not be open at the times you book it for?? If the splash pool doesn’t open until 12:30 then why would you accept bookings for earlier time slots and encourage more disappointment to those who have expected a whole lot more from this awfully bad experience. Thankfully not too far away there was another waterpark in Guildford that had plenty for my child to do!!! Now you can see why the measly £65 refund after all this trouble seems a little pathetic. By all means listen back to all of the telephone conversations & you will see how we was sold a dream few days but was in fact sold a complete nightmare. I could only give this place a 1 star because thats the lowest you can give, in real terms i'd give this a 0 star rating. Collapse
This park is on its knees. Even worse that 2017.

I’m not sure what Chessington have been doing over the 5 month closure during the winter. It certainly isn’t refurbishment. Where to start....? Hocus Pocus Hall, an outdated and, at best average walkthrough attraction is now worse than ever. This should be a 3d glasses experience. It’s the whole point. For 2018 and presumably to save money, Chessington now no longer give you 3d glasses. You now walk about in a bunch of dark rooms which are desperately in need of a repaint without the dimension the whole experience was designed for. Zufari had a massive 100 minute queue despite being advertised as 45mins. Three of the five trucks were inoperable and just sat there at the ride entrance, annoying everyone who had just waited over an hour and a half to get on an already tired looking safari ride where the only real highlight are the giraffes. The pathetic waterfall effect is hardly a climax. Just one dodgy speaker working in the truck. The other three broken. The spiel was therefore inaudible and this on one of the only trucks working. Appalling maintenance. Tomb Raider looking well past its sell by date. Again, no audio working in the ride vehicles making a weak ride even worse. Buccaneer Pirate Ship wasn’t there at all. The ship has been removed. No idea if it’s coming back. Vampire ride has needed a paint for years but still hasn’t received it. The dusty animatronic dude playing the organ hasn’t worked for years I believe? The ride has been there since 1990 and is still the headline attraction! It looks like it’s on its last legs. At least it works this year. In 2017 the season opened and it was broken for months. Peeking Heights Ferris wheel has now gone, although that’s not a bad thing. Dragons Fury is still rusty, clunky, noisy and a thoroughly painful ride to experience once you have endured the queue. Looks like it’s had its day but they still manage to keep it going. The Burger Kitchen now has screens to order like McDonalds which is a great addition for 2018 and will hopefully speed ordering times up. Rameses Revenge still looks filthy, rusty and old. It could do with a good spruce up. Just paint it. Rattlesnake also looks in a bad way. The queue area should be condemned. There’s a rotten headless animatronic that used to climb a rope many moons ago still just sat there, mouldy and looking tragic. I’m not sure if the new Tiger theming on the log flume is going to brighten the place up when (and if) it opens in May. It’s still the old ride but with caged Tigers coming from Europe walking around the attraction. Sounds like a good idea and hope it’s done well. Right in the centre of the Park is Guest Services. This had a line out the door of presumably disgruntled guests waiting for their turn to have a moan and the state of the Park. It’s not the cleverest location for a place of complaint to be at the centre of heaviest footfall. Everyone else can see all the fed up guests, fuming in the huge queue whilst they walk past. Chessington (like Legoland Windsor) needs MAJOR investment. It just does not cut it in 2018 in my opinion. Collapse

Chessington always provides a great family day out with something for everyone. We visited as a family of five including children aged 8,5,3 they all found rides suitable for their fear levels and also enjoyed looking at the zoo animals and sea life centre. The park has received lots of ride upgrades since I began visiting as a child but there are still a few bits that could do with a facelift. Dodgems are a favourite family attraction for us, but the dodgems here are in desperate need of a fresh lick of paint and a tiny bit more go in the tank, using these provides basically the same experience as the tiny truckers ride. I hope they are upgraded and not removed because its great to have some rides that have smaller ques. Rameses is also looking tired. The arcade area is also lacking, having visited during the snow we headed to the arcades for the kids to have a go on the 2p machines whilst they warmed up but they got bored very quickly, it seems silly but the machines were so thinly laid and lacking in awful 10p keyrings that they got no joy and actually left without spending all their coins preferring to save them for when they can use them on a machine where they can actually "win"...give the kids a chance. Kudos to the staff on out visit.. snowing all day lots of the big rides weren't open and lots of the staff were frozen but they remained cheerful throughout and did all they could to keep guests happy and attractions open. We will be back. Collapse

Just returned from opening day of the new year....bonus was it was practically empty, so me and the boy got on 6 rides b4 2pm. Left after that as it was absolutely freezing, also bonus was anyone who attended today gets free entry as a couple rides closed due to snow. Didn't cost me anything to get in as have Merlin pass.... I don't mind going as my son likes it and wastes a few hours, wouldn't pay full price . Happy dayz Collapse

I decided to go the chessington world of adventure, after seeing a deal £15 per person and £3 parking, it was th3 last day of half term on the Sunday, I arrived at 09.45 the place was already in full swing with loads of cars parking, I thought I was going to be in for a real treat. Alas that was not so, the sweet shop we will open at 12.15. There were children wanting to play, games to win a toy, no opens at 11.15. We wondered in the arcade, omg there should be a law against that arcade some ombudsmen somewhere, it is the worst rip off for children I’ve ever seen, I travelled the world and not worst than this, they have a 2p slider machine all the 2p fall down the sides, the children think they’ve won but nothing, if you play the games, you win like 4 tickets, it’s a £1 a time, 20 tickets gets you a 5p little pack of fizzy sweets. The toy shops are extremely over priced too. Rock is ok priced and candy floss. The actual animal attractions a lot were closed, we walked around slowly took pictures had a hot drink each and it was 2 hours and done, I asked directions to the theme parks and was told don’t bother only a couple of kids rides open, there was no mention that very little would be open, yet the place was packed, it was a missed chance for the park to earn a lot money, a very very poor service to those that went xxxx Collapse
