About Lend Me a Tenor
Adapted from the award winning play by Ken Ludwig Lend me a Tenor the musical is a comedy of mistaken identity, charades and surprising romance.
1934 Ohio and a small opera company are relying on a famed Tenor to sing in their production of 'Otello' saving them from financial ruin and they disbandment of the group. Before the tenor Tito Merelli can even leave his dressing room his wife accuses him of cheating when she finds a young female fan hiding in his cupboard. Following this the star of the show Tito Merelli takes too many sedatives and is unable to perform, the company manager insists the show must go on and enlists the director's assistant as his new lead. Chaos and comedy ensues as the plot twists and turns in this musical farce.
Lend Me a Tenor the musical is directed by the Olivier award-winning Ian Talbot and stars the Olivier award-winning Matthew Kelly. Book and lyrics are by Peter Sham with music by Brad Carroll. The first UK production of Lend me a Tenor the musical previewed at the Theatre Royal Plymouth. The West End production opens in June at the Gielgud Theatre.
The original play premiered at the Gielgud Theatre (then called the Globe Theatre) in 1986 before it premiered on Broadway in 1989 winning two Tony Awards. The play was revived in 2010 to huge acclaim.
