Antony and Cleopatra Theatre Show Information

A historical and tragic love story about Mark Antony and Cleopatra after the fall of Julius Caesar.

About Antony and Cleopatra

A classic Shakespearean tragedy, this version of William Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra is redirected by returning director, Iqbal Khan. Khan’s return comes after two critically-acclaimed productions of Othello (2015) and Much Ado About Nothing (2012).

The Story

Following Caesar’s death, Mark Antony, Octavius Caesar and Lepidus all rule the Roman Empire. After a trip to Alexandria, Mark Antony becomes enamoured with Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, which sparks gossip, scandal and disapproval back in Rome. Mark Antony returns to Rome and attempts to regain trust by marrying Octavius’s sister, Octavia. Needless to say, this news sends Cleopatra into a jealous rage with fatal consequences.

History of Antony and Cleopatra

The play is believed to have first been performed in the early 1600s at the Blackfriars- or Globe Theatre. It has been performed and adapted many times since its first stage debut, and has seen Patrick Stewart, Harriett Walter, Darrell D’Silva and Kathryn Hunter all star in the leading roles as Antony and Cleopatra.
