About An American in Paris

The Tony® Award-winning Broadway musical based on the Oscar® Award-winning film, Christopher Wheeldon’s An American in Paris has taken the West End by storm. The romantic musical will feature timeless music from George and Ira Gershwin and will include some of their most classic songs, including I Got Rhythm and ‘S wonderful. Broadway stars and prestigious ballet dancers, Robert Fairchild and Leanne Cope are the show’s leading characters, playing the roles of Jerry Mulligan and Lise Dassin.

The Story

This musical transports us to the streets of Paris where the American World War II Army veteran, Jerry Mulligan, is hoping to forget the life of brutal combat and make it as a painter. Mulligan happens upon a beautiful young dancer called Lise and they become entwined in a contemporary romantic tale of art, friendship and love in the aftermath of the war.

History of An American in Paris

An American in Paris was inspired by George Gershwin’s 1928 composition entitled ‘An American in Paris’ and was later adapted into the well-known film in 1951. The classic film starring Gene Kelly and Oscar Levant was a big hit and the musical version came to the stage for the first time in 2014 at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, starring dancers Robert Fairchild and Leanne Cope.
