Stockholm the capital of Sweden is spread out over a number of islands between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea. In summer take a boat trip to a restaurant on one of the many islands which make up the spectacular archipelago. In winter visit the beautifully preserved historical Old Town with Christmas markets and candlelit shops.

Arrived in Stockholm centre by bus from Skavsta Airport (flew with Ryanair), the hotel was on an ocean liner permanently moored on the waterfront with great views and perfect location for getting around. Hotel staff were so friendly and helpful. Spent the afternoon wandering around the shops in the old town and testing a few of the amazing cake shops and ate in the evening in a great Italian restaurant near Central Station. Would definitely recommend the The Vasa Museum - the description of it doesn't do it justice, but it's an amazing sight. The theme park nearby has the highest free-fall ride in the world - gives amazing views from the top, but takes your breath away when you fall - impossible to scream! Watched the FA Cup final in a pub called the Dubliners, and went out to Berns nightclub. Everywhere people were friendly and helpful and spoke excellent English. Highly recommended as a place to visit.

We walked around for most of the day taking in the sights (mainly of the women). There are many coffee shops that serve great food and good coffee. In the evening's, we ate at Sally's restaurant which serves excellent food, slightly expensive but well worth it! For best bars, we found that Cafe Opera was the place to be, however you must be on the guest list to get in before 1am, after you should be fine!

I visited Sweden in January as I wanted to see some Winter landscapes. I was not disappointed! There was a good covering snow everywhere and despite the chill I found the air invigerating. As on previous visits I found the Swedish people to be friendly and welcoming. Some also had quite a dry sense of humour! Most spoke very good English and were impressed even by my efforts of speaking just a few words of Swedish! I explored much of snow-covered Stockholm on foot and used the excellent Swedish train services to visit Uppsala, which has a stunning cathedral, and Sundsvall, where the sea had frozen! I would recommend visiting the Skansen open-air musuem in Stockholm, where a number of older builders (mainly of wood) have been re-assembled. There is also a zoo where you can see reindeer and elk. Unfortunately, the bears where hibernating when I visited! I also enjoyed hearing a number of free organ concerts at the Storkyrkan Cathedral, St Clara Church and Katarina Church in Stockholm. If you haven't visited Sweden yet why not give it a try?!

I stayed in the Malardrottningen Hotel booked thru Superbreak which was a lovely experience staying on a ship, 3 star very central location with great views. Buffet breakfast had excellent choice and the cabin was very compact & functional with bunk, desk, wardrobe and ensuite/shower. Not luxury but practical and great place for tourists.
