A Grand Hotel

Stay Date: 23/10/14, a customer aged 45-64 who stayed at 3* Grand Hotel Scarborough in Scarborough wrote this review.

I was a little reticent when I booked the Grand Hotel because it was so cheap. When I arrived and booked in at reception I was taken aback by the sheer size and scale of the building. The lobby is See More  Read more information spectacular with ornate decorations and an amazing staircase accessing the first floor gallery accommodation and ball room. The breakfast room also has some of the most amazing views over the NorthShore Bay. The upper floors of the hotel however are a different story. Long dowdy corridors and, sadly, plenty of cheap and cheerful 'wood chip' wall paper. My room was on the third floor at the end ofa very long corridor. It was clean and had everything I needed, including a toilet and very nice shower, a TV and tea and coffee making facilities. My only real criticism is the hotels policy to allowguests to keep dogs in their rooms. I've never stayed in any hotel before where this is permitted and to be honest its a little off putting. The thought that you may be sleeping in a bed that's beenused by a dog before you is awful. I'm also not keen on the thought that many dogs carry 'little friends' about them that can easily infest carpets etc. That aside, I'm really glad I stayed at TheGrand Hotel in Scarborough if only to tell my friends where not to stay when visiting what is otherwise a very nice seaside town. The local people are also very pleasant and welcoming.   Collapse  Hide

A Wet Weekend

See More  Read more information Meals were good, but I wouldn't have wanted to pay the full price for them. Scarborough is interesting with lots to do on afirst visit. (castle, fun park, theme park, Sealife Centre, beach and several places on the way in) This was my tenth so I'd already tried most things. The weather ranged from balmy to torrential inthe same day. There was a Seafest going on which offered some folk music, comedy and crafts for the adults and more for the children.   Collapse  Hide

Grand Hotel Scarborough

Stay Date: 25/07/08, a customer from Wishaw who stayed at 3* Grand Hotel Scarborough (3 or 4 night Half Board Offer) in Scarborough wrote this review.

The hotel is undergoing much needed refurbishment, the room was comfortable with excellent bathroom. The exterior of the building is infested with nesting seagulls which are noisey and messy! The See More  Read more information noise they make from dawn would disturb the heaviest sleeper as they are roosting so close to the windows and much of the out-door furniture on the terrace was covered in droppings. Meals wereacceptable although service was not great, if you needed anything you had to look for staff who could be slow re-stocking the buffet. Bar prices were very high, even for a hotel. Maid service was minimal, binsweren't emptied nor bath cleaned. Parking was a problem, once you find a space on the surrounding streets you can buy a guest's parking permit for £4.50 a day, I still got a parking ticket as thewarden apparently didn't think the permit was valid! On the plus side there was entertainment laid on every night which was of a good standard although seating was very limited. The public areas of thehotel were comfortable and toilets were kept in reasonable order. The location on the south bay was excellent for the town and front, the hotel is next to the lift which goes down the cliff to theshore. This could be so much better with a little thought and effort.   Collapse  Hide

Stay Date: 04/09/08, a customer from Chester who stayed at 3* The Royal Hotel & Spa Scarborough in Scarborough wrote this review.

When we arrived in scarborough it was a lovely warm day one of the few we've had this year, we noticed a mist coming in from the sea, known as the fret, this stayed for 2 days, after the mist cleared See More  Read more information the remainder of the holiday was very pleasant. The royal hotel is very nice, beautiful chandeliers on the main stairway, the leisure facilities are in the basement of the hotel, swimming pool isquite small but pleasant, the spa bath/jacuzzi is excellent, didn't try the sauna or steam room as they were away from the pool and we couldn't leave the children on their own. Breakfast in the hotelvery good, food piping hot and plates always hot, staff very friendly and helpful. Family room very good size, (seagulls a bit noisy at night)   Collapse  Hide

Refreshing Scarborough

Stay Date: 19/01/14, a customer aged 25-44 who stayed at 3* The Royal Hotel & Spa Scarborough in Scarborough wrote this review.

Enjoyable stay at the Royal. Warmest hotel we've ever stayed in! Room was good and clean. Bathroom slightly tired, the toilet seat was broken and the shower only worked on cold. Bath was lovely and See More  Read more information warm though. Breakfast was OK. Spa facilities needed updating and mending. There were no locks on the lockers, the Jacuzzi was out of order, and we didn't find the steam room until we were leaving dueto lack of signs. Car parking can be an issue as the hotel does not have a car park of it's own and parking fees are high. You can park in the nearby car park outside the Grand for free between 6pmand 9am but don't be late the traffic wardens hunt in packs!   Collapse  Hide

The Grand Hotel, Scarborough

Stay Date: 23/05/14, a customer aged 45-64 from Woodbridge who stayed at 3* Grand Hotel Scarborough (3 or 4 night Half Board Offer) in Scarborough wrote this review.

Was one of the Premier Hotels on the North east Coast, sadly long past. The building is in poor repair & decor throughout. After check in we went to our room to discover it was not just small but See More  Read more information over filled with furniture, the TV was an old CRT and sat on a chest so close to the bed my wife could not pass through the gap. we went down and requested an upgrade as advertised in the room, noneavailable. So we moved the TV. The micro on-suit had mold in the shower on the ceiling, mixer tap, grab handle & all round the edges and no plug in the sink. The door lock was loose and there was nohandle inside so the pull on a yale lock knob was too much for my wife's grip. An older person with arthritis would not get out in a hurry. Also no phone in room. The dining room was well set up &furnished, the food was very good for self service mass catering, the staff were excellent. The view from the dining room would have been the best in Scarborough but for the state of the windows which hadnot been cleaned for several seasons. We went down for breakfast on Tuesday morning and found a huge Q, We went back & packed for departure then wend down again and the Q was longer, with a ?10 penaltyfor late checkout we skipped breakfast and checked out. We mad no comment to the receptionist, she was doing her job well. Will not return without a major refit or sale to another company.   Collapse  Hide

Too short a stay

Stay Date: 02/06/14, a customer aged 65+ who stayed at 3* Grand Hotel Scarborough in Scarborough wrote this review.

We only stayed for two nights, would have preferred longer to enable us to see a bit more. Stayed at the Grand Hotel. There is no doubt that the building is grand and would be the place to stay in See More  Read more information its heyday. The standard double room we had was small with what I would say was a 3/4 size bed. The decor was tired and would benefit from refurbishment. The staff are all friendly and efficient. The entertainment consisted of some music, an hour's bingo and an hour's entertainment, quite good but the same dance / song team both nights. The bar prices were a little on the expensive side with a90p charge for a dash of lemonade! After all that we would consider going back but would upgrade to a premier room next time (we already upgraded from an interior room without any windows to anexterior room).   Collapse  Hide

Famous hotel - slightly faded grandeur!

Stay Date: 27/07/15, a customer aged 65+ who stayed at 3* Grand Hotel Scarborough in Scarborough wrote this review.

The Grand is a historic hotel - part of the Scarborough landscape and with an interesting past, though these days it is a 'grand' hotel catering for the masses. This is probably the only way a hotel See More  Read more information like this can keep going - and it does so fairly well. However you need to close your eyes and let the imagination work in order to glimpse the magic of the past. Nowadays the carvery style dining isadequate and efficient - the view from the dining room remains superb. My single room was in the bowels of the hotel where a number of new rooms have been created to increase capacity. It was verysmall (only a little bigger than a train sleeper compartment) though I have to say all the appliances were brand new and high quality. It had no view (which didn't worry me as I like to be out andabout) but was quiet and the bed was comfortable. Parking can be a problem - 'of course, the Victorians would have arrived by horse and carriage' you realise on discovering that this huge hotel has nocar park. You have to find a space in the nearby square/ streets - I was lucky. The hotel has negotiated a good deal with the local council for a reasonably priced all day ticket to display - which isgenerously valid till midday approx. on the next day so you don't have to rush out at 8am on your day of departure to display a new ticket. This is a busy hotel though I never had to wait long to getattention. It is a 19th century building trying to cater for a (very different!) 21st century travelling public - and making a very reasonable job of it. I enjoyed staying here - just look at thatgrand staircase and let the imagination flow!   Collapse  Hide

Clifton Hotel, Scarborough

Stay Date: 23/10/06, a customer from Newark who stayed at 2* Clifton Hotel in Scarborough wrote this review.

This hotel enjoys a very prominent position overlooking the North Bay. It is very comfortably furnished and at least some of the bedrooms have been very nicely refurbished. The food at dinner was See More  Read more information excellent, but the hot breakfast was rarely as hot as it could have been; certain parts of it could be actually cold when first delivered to the table. Scarborough is a very nice place to visit; thewalk along Prince Albert Drive from the North Bay to the Town Centre is very invigorating. Cheap Night At The Grand

Wouldn't Recommend Hotel

Stay Date: 25/07/11, a customer from Uk who stayed at 2* Clifton Hotel in Scarborough wrote this review.

Royal Hotel and Spa Scarborough

Stay Date: 01/04/13, a customer aged 45-64 who stayed at 3* The Royal Hotel & Spa Scarborough in Scarborough wrote this review.

We went to Scarborough for a few days away during the school holidays. We were very disappointed with the standard of the hotel accommodation at the Royal Hotel and Spa. The hotel was tired, and See More  Read more information dated. Our room was actually sloping from one side of the room to the other and so was the bed! In fact we had to turn the bed around fully to help improve the angle of the slope and not roll out of bed.The room ceilings and carpets were stained and dirty, windows draughty and there was a 2 inch gap under the door. Wardrobe tilted forward due to the slope meaning that when you opened it, the ironingboard fell out. Although booked a family room for three, only two sets of towels were provided. TV in room continually emitting a loud buzzing noise, which meant that we could not watch anything.Pool area was very shabby and tired with large chunks of the wall missing in certain areas and if that wasnt enough, you are charged extra for use of the pool. This was mostly disappointing and wouldnot rate this above a 2 star (it is supposed to be 3 star). This is not worth the ?168 paid for 2 nights' stay.   Collapse  Hide

Not so Grand Hotel in Scarborough

Stay Date: 17/03/14, a customer aged 45-64 from Middlesbrough who stayed at 3* Grand Hotel Scarborough in Scarborough wrote this review.

On arrival, hotel reception staff pleasant and friendly especially male receptionist, sorry can't remember his name, but he was very helpful. Rooms offered were extremely small and "depressing", See More  Read more information staff obliged by changing rooms which were bigger and slightly better! Hotel in general is in need of a complete make-over and lots of the furniture should be discarded especially in bedrooms and diningroom and you can hardly see out of the bedroom windows as they are that dirty!. Staff in dining room overall were quite abrupt and clearly looked as though they did not enjoy their job with theexception of Duncan who greeted everybody and was quite jolly!! Food ok but not always very hot and we are not keen on frozen vegetables! Really difficult to get a hot cup of tea in the dining room, forsuch a large hotel, the use of flasks was really not sufficient!! When we asked for hot water you think we had asked them for a million pounds!! Power cut on our last night, although the hotel were notresponsible we did not feel they managed the situation well at all. Lack of lighting was very frightening for a lot of the guests, who are generally more mature guests and for a hotel of this size, Iwould have expected a back up generator to be in place. Staff slow to respond in terms of informing guests what was happening and this was a real health and safety hazard! Bingo each night started at8.30pm until approx 9pm, the live entertainment did not start until 9.45pm. Lots of spare time which could have been used for something such as a quiz. I feel the live show should have been earlier butthe entertainment team worked in another hotel first!! On our last night, due to power cut the entertainment was moved to another hotel that had electricity and we were invited to go there. However,as we needed our coats to leave the hotel late at night in the cold and being on the sixth floor with no lighting was not practicable and we had also just purchased drinks in preparation for the showstarting!. Power was off for approx 15 mins, the entertainment could have then resumed in our hotel, lack of information from staff despite requesting to know what was happening resulted in peoplejust sitting waiting and wondering what was happening. Lots of people choose this hotel due to price and entertainment but they did not live up to expectations. On a positive, the location of the hotelfor Scarborough is good. but I really do think the hotel would benefit from a visit from the hotel inspector.   Collapse  Hide

The not so Grand Grand Hotel Scarbourough

Stay Date: 01/05/14, a customer aged 45-64 from Wigan who stayed at 3* Grand Hotel Scarborough in Scarborough wrote this review.

We had breakfast which left a little bit to be desired but edible none the less. Got lucky with parking outside the hotel so could have been worse if there was noroom outside. The staircase was very grand thou the room was just basic but guess you get what you pay for. Time for a real makeover!

Stay Date: 01/01/90, a customer who stayed at 3* The Royal Hotel & Spa Scarborough in Scarborough wrote this review.

Well if you like a rabbit warren See More  Read more information museum from the 70's this is for you! The hotel entrance is grand and does not indicate what your room may be like. The room was found on the 5th floor- not easy to locate as one lift only goes tothe 4th!. Add that there was onlyone towel and the bulb in the light above the bathroom mirror was not working and it became clear this is a hotel in need of major refurbishment - NOTE this was identified as an executive room! Onchecking out we were told we were one hour late as check out time was clearly stipulated on the welcome letter as 10 am - it is not, whilst the booklet in the room stipulates very clearly it is 11am.On stating this with the individual he said he would give us the benefit of the doubt!
