After breakfast join the train for a trip to Cheltenham, a regency town on the edge of the Cotswolds which enjoyed its heyday in the 19th century as a health resort where wealthy visitors would come to “take the waters”. For this reason it is often referred to as Cheltenham Spa and many of the Regency architectural and heritage features can still be seen today. After enjoying the town it is time to head to Worcester, a beautiful cathedral and university city with a rich industrial history and interesting architecture. Worcester boasts an impressive selection of high street shops and independent boutiques and a vibrant programme of events. At the end of the day it is time to head back to Bristol for your overnight stay. Read more
Today, explore the Cotswolds via Gloucester. The Cotswolds covers a huge area – almost 800 square miles – and runs through five counties (Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire and Worcestershire). One of the delights of visiting the Cotswolds is exploring the different areas, each with its own identity, yet all with those defining Cotswold features: golden stone and rolling hills. Explore quintessentially English villages of honey-coloured stone, take in lively market towns, visit some of the country’s greatest palaces, castles and country houses, marvel at the natural world in acclaimed reserves and parks or walk through breathtaking landscapes along historic trails. At the end of the day you can return to Bristol with your rail pass. Read more
After a hearty breakfast it's time to head to the historic spa town of Bath. Set in the rolling countryside of southwest England, Bath is world famous for its natural hot springs and 18th-century Georgian architecture. Honey-coloured Bath stone has been used extensively in the town’s buildings, including at Bath Abbey, noted for its fan-vaulting and extensive stained-glass windows. The museum at the site of the original Roman baths includes the remains of the hypercaust heating system, statues and a Roman temple. The famous Great Bath is closed to bathers but visitors can still bathe in the thermal waters which have made the town famous since Roman times in the modern Thermae Bath Spa complex. Read more
