Superbreak Urges Agents To Latch On To New ‘Staycation’ Trend04 August 2008
There’s a hot new trend in travel being talked about at the moment – the ‘Staycation’. This means swapping your traditional family ‘vacation’ overseas for a stay at home or in the UK. With more and more talk about the so called credit crunch on people’s spending habits, it is thought that more people will opt for day trips and short breaks for their holiday this year and Superbreak is urging agents across the UK to latch on to this trend and ensure they are working hard to maximise sales.
All is not doom and gloom and the operator reports that sales are currently holding up on last year. For example, last week (week ending 27 July 2008) agents booked over £1.2 million on leisure breaks in the UK through Superbreak, an increase of 4% on the same week last year.
Ian Mounser, sales director at Superbreak comments “On balance, operators and agents would much prefer rising disposable incomes and house prices and we are no different. However, factors such as very short booking lead times and the increasing cost of flying are making UK hotel breaks a relatively attractive proposition for everyone. As families tighten their belts it is likely that we may see more and more people opting to take breaks on home turf and I expect the ‘staycationing’ trend to continue for the rest of the summer and into the autumn. Superbreak is very well placed to capitalise on this, with excellent last minute availability in all key UK break destinations, plus the ability to book up to and including the day of travel.”
