A one-off concert on 27 June 2008 at Hyde Park has just been announced to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday. An audience of 46,664 people will pay their tributes to one of the world’s most loved leader and he is expected to make a rare public appearance on the day. Tickets are likely to sell fast but why not make a short break of it with a package from Superbreak (www.superbreak.com) that includes overnight accommodation and tickets to the concert.
The former South African president, who has retired from public life, will be joined by some of the biggest names from the worlds of pop and politics at the Hyde Park event. An eclectic line-up of performers is set to include Queen + Paul Rodgers, Annie Lennox, Simple Minds, Leona Lewis, the Sugababes, Dame Shirley Bassey, Razorlight, Andrea and Sharon Corr, Eddy Grant and Jamelia. They will also be joined by a range of South African and African artists. Prime Minister Gordon Brown, former US President Bill Clinton, talk show queen Oprah Winfrey and British Formula One star Lewis Hamilton are among those expected to attend.
Proceeds will go to Mr Mandela's 46664 campaign which raises awareness about Aids in Africa and elsewhere, taking its name from the former president's prison number during his captivity on Robben Island. The concert will feature numerous unexpected appearances, with several major artists keeping silent about their involvement in order to take both Mr Mandela and the audience by surprise.
