York Barbican to Stage UK Championship Snooker
Date Posted: 28/08/13
Snooker has seen something of a resurgence in recent years, with a host of new dates on the calendar and some bright new stars to challenge the established old guard.
And the likes of Neil Robertson, Judd Trump and Jack Lisowski will be among those taking to the Baize in York this December for the WilliamHill.com UK Championship - the second biggest tournament of the year.
York is enough of a tourist mecca in itself - with millions of visitors heading north each year to see The Shambles, Clifford's Tower, the Jorvik Viking Centre and the city's famous minster.
But the city has long been a favourite spot on the snooker circuit too, and tickets have sold well since the UK Championships was restored to York in 2011.
This year's tournament takes place at the York Barbican between November 27th and December 8th, with tickets already on sale.
And with the top 16 seeds no longer having guaranteed passage to the final 32, there will be 128 players competing in the opening round - and consequently plenty of opportunities for a giant killing.
The larger field also means the tournament will last longer than usual, giving snooker fans plenty of opportunity to plan a week or weekend city break in York.
