Where will you see the Olympic Torch relay?
Date Posted: 27/04/12
The London 2012 Olympic Torch relay will commence at Land's End in Cornwall on Saturday, May 19th after being lit in Greece the day before.
It will go on a 70-day, 8,000-mile journey around the UK, ensuring that 95 per cent of the population will be within ten miles of it at some point.
Sports fans looking to mark the momentous event may want to go on short breaks to one of the journey's stand out locations.
They include a trip to Caerphilly Castle in South Wales on Saturday, May 26th, the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland on Monday, June 4th and York Minster on Wednesday, June 20th.
Around 8,000 torchbearers will carry the symbolic flame, all nominated by someone they know, alongside a number of carefully selected celebrities and sports personalities.
The Torch represents the fire stolen from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus. It was alleged to have kept burning throughout the duration of the Olympic Games.
It was re-introduced to the modern Olympics at the 1928 games in Amsterdam.
