West End extensions
Date Posted: 13/01/15
Last week, it was reported that Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats would extend its booking period until late April, with West End stalwart Kerry Ellis taking the stage in the role of Grizabella. And it seems that quite a few shows have followed suit, with plenty of great musicals getting well-deserved extensions into late 2015. Take a look below and see if you're inspired to take a trip to London to see any of them.
The Lion King
It would have been truly shocking had this show announced anything otherwise, but it has been confirmed that the Disney classic will remain at the Lyceum Theatre at least until October 4th 2015. The show has played to millions around the globe and, as a firm family favourite, has had a place in the West End since 1999. It's worth seeing for the spectacular opening number The Circle of Life, which sees a group of African animals recreated in puppet form march down the aisle through the audience, including a full-sized elephant.
Shakespeare in Love
We're glad to announce that this hilarious romantic comedy has not yet outstayed its welcome with West End audiences, extending its booking period until June 27th. The story, in which Britain's favourite playwright finds inspiration in a beautiful young woman who will stop at nothing to appear in his next play, has been delighting everyone - critics, regular theatregoers and newcomers to the scene. Catch it while you can.
The Railway Children
More good news for families as it has been confirmed that The Railway Children - which pulled into London's theatre scene in December - will be delaying its departure time by almost nine months until September 6th. That's National Rail for you! For a change though, it's actually a welcome announcement. A purpose-built theatre houses the play at London’s King’s Cross Station that incorporates a real train track, while the timeless story remains tender even after all these years.
The heat is still on in Saigon if box office figures at the Prince Edward Theatre are to be believed. This Boublil and Schonberg classic will be staying firmly where it is until September 26th following a booking extension that proves there is still plenty of appetite for this tale of love and loss. Musical theatre hits among the score include The Movie In My Mind, The Last Night of the World and I'd Give My Life For You, while the famous scene in which a helicopter lands and takes off on the stage is recreated with incredible effect.
Book of Mormon
Lovers of musical comedy will hear that they will have plenty more opportunity to secure tickets to Broadway import Book of Mormon, which is set to remain firmly where it is until at least May 2nd. The show, written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez, has a naughty side that has been making audiences cackle with glee since it first premiered in the US. Near unanimously positive reviews mean you simply have to see it if you're a musical theatre fan.
