Tamsin Greig 'tremendous' musical debut

Critics have praised Tamsin Greig's musical debut in the new production of the show Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which premiered this week in front of London's critical press.
Featuring Greig in the lead role of Pepa, the show is based on the film of the same name by Pedro Almodóvar, in which a number of women struggle to retain control of their own lives in the face of chaos.
While Greig has run up an impressive list of credits on the small screen (Greenwing, Black Books and Friday Night Dinner) and onstage (The Little Dog Laughed and Jumpy) she expressed nerves at having to sing live for the first time in front of an audience.
"I suspected I could be loud," she joked. "But it's a muscular act, so it's been like training as an athlete ... it's been a real journey.
"And learning something new at this age when you think, 'Yeah, I'm fine. I'm here, I'm fine now', has been so challenging and invigorating. It's been wonderful."
The hard work has paid off, it seems, with a positive critical reception for the musical as a whole, but particularly for Greig's portrayal of Pepa.
Musical theatre stalwarts taking on roles in the musical include Haydn Gwynne (Billy Elliot) and Willemijn Verkaik (Wicked), with the strong supporting cast also boasting Jérôme Pradon, Anna Skellern, Ricardo Afonso and Haydn Oakley.
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios) first came to the cinema in the form of a Spanish black comedy-drama film in 1988. It was conceived as a musical in 2010 when it premiered on Broadway, but drastic revisions have been made to the script for its London debut.
