Taken at Midnight for West End transfer
Date Posted: 31/10/14
Actress Penelope Wilton will return to London's vibrant theatrical scene next year for the first time since 2009, as she leads the successful Chichester production Taken at Midnight to the Theatre Royal Haymarket.
The play, written by Mark Hayhurst, is currently running at Chichester Festival Theatre, but a West End transfer will mean that London theatrical fans will not have to travel all the way there to see this emotionally charged and fascinating piece of creative work.
It takes place in Germany during the 1930s, with Hitler's rise to power playing a key role in the action. Wilton will reprise her role as Irmgard, mother of celebrated lawyer Hans Litten, who puts the dictator on the witness stand in court with devastating consequences.
Fighting against the powerful Nazi regime, Irmgard puts herself in enormous personal risk, with the story proving both incredibly emotional and deeply thought-provoking.
The play has been receiving rave reviews at the Chichester Minerva Theatre, with many praising Wilton's deeply compelling performance. Other credits to her name include Downton Abbey, a recurring character in the Doctor Who revival in 2005 and a stage appearance opposite Jude Law in Hamlet. The role in Taken at Midnight was written with her in mind.
Those wishing to see the latest glittering jewel in the West End will need to get to the Theatre Royal Haymarket for its strictly limited stint, which will commence with a press night on January 15th, making it the first new play to open in London in 2015.
So far, there has been no indication of whether Wilton's co-stars at the Chichester production will accompany her in the transfer, but we at SuperBreak will be sure to bring you the latest updates over the coming weeks.
