See Rossini’s Otello in Paris
Date Posted: 26/03/14
Rossini’s famous opera Otello is to be performed in Paris from April 7th to 17th at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.
Performed for the first time on December 4, 1816, Rossini's Otello veers from Shakespeare’s story, but is nonetheless riveting and emotional. The character of Iago is less important in this version and not so evil, while new characters are introduced, such as Elmiro the father of Desdemona.
The opera gained enormous success throughout Europe in the 19th century, until Verdi's version, seventy years later, became the preferred one to watch.
In the 1980s however, Rossini’s opera made a comeback and visitors to Paris can see it today in the stunning Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, one of the most beautiful show venues in the city and a listed building, symbolic of French architecture from the 20th century.
See the opera on a city break to the French capital and stay at one of a range of excellent Paris hotels.
