Sam Mendes to bring Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to the West End
Date Posted: 13/07/12
Sam Mendes is set to direct a West End musical based on the Roald Dahl novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Fans of the exciting story should book London theatre breaks next summer to catch the show, which has its world premiere at the London Palladium on Sunday, June 23rd.
Dahl's 1964 book tells the tale of a boy from a poor family who, by chance, wins a golden ticket to explore an astounding sweet factory owned by the eccentric Willy Wonka.
It is not yet known who is to play the important role of Willy Wonka. Johnny Depp and Gene Wilder have both played the character in film adaptations in 1971 and 2005, respectively.
The songs will be created by the man behind Hairspray Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman, while Mark Thompson will be working on the costume and set design and Peter Darling, of Matilda and Billy Elliot fame, will take care of choreography.
Mendes will turn his attention to the musical after his work has been completed on the upcoming James Bond film Skyfall.
