Once musical makes transatlantic trip to the West End
Date Posted: 26/09/12
Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Once is making the long journey over the Atlantic, as it moves to London's West End.
There are scant details on the run, besides that it will take up residence at the Phoenix Theatre following the conclusion of Blood Brothers' 21-year stint and a brief spell of Goodnight Mister Tom.
Given that it comes to an end in March, theatre fans should be looking to book theatre breaks in London some time after that to catch the American production, which has won eight Tony Awards from 12 nominations, including Best Musical.
It is based on the 2007 Oscar-winning independent film of the same name about a busker who falls in love with a Czech immigrant in Dublin, with their story told through the songs they write.
The music and lyrics in Once were composed by the real life Irish and Czech duo that the film is based on, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, who together are named The Swell Season. They both also wrote the score for the film.
Playwright Enda Walsh, who has previously worked on Disco Pigs, took care of the script.
