New Report Highlights Diversity in London Theatre

Everyone knows that London has one of the most eclectic and vibrant theatre scenes on the planet, but now it’s been confirmed that the British capital is the “most significant” theatre destination in the world.
A new report, commissioned by the National Theatre and the Society of London Theatre, has revealed that over 22 million people watched a show in London in 2012/13.
What’s more, 2012/13 box office takings at the city’s theatres came in at £618.5 million - more than was taken at cinemas in London during the same period.
The study also highlighted the diversity of London’s performance spaces, pointing out there are some 241 professional theatres in the city with a combined capacity of over 110,000. These range from the 30-seat Lord Stanley Pub to venues like the Hammersmith Apollo that can hold 3,600 people.
The biggest difficulty when organising a theatre break in London, therefore, is deciding what to see. Among the top shows currently playing in the capital are Made in Dagenham, Miss Saigon, Skylight and A Streetcar Named Desire, which currently stars Gillian Anderson.
