National Museum of Scotland opens to the public after £47m refurbishment
Date Posted: 29/07/11
The National Museum of Scotland will welcome its first visitors today after undergoing a refit costing £47 million.
Those booking Edinburgh hotels will be able to walk round 16 new galleries – taking the total to 36 – featuring more than 8,000 objects looking at life around us, both in terms of science and culture.
It has taken three years to carry out the refit, which has seen the interior of the building restored to its original state, while extra public space has been made out of storage areas.
"The reopening of the National Museum of Scotland, on time and within budget is a tremendous achievement as importantly it allows us to liberate the strengths of our great collections and mobilise their great potential for dynamic development," said chairman of the National Museums Scotland's board of trustees Sir Angus Grossart.
As well as galleries on dinosaurs and technology, there will also be one which explores the history of Scotland, from the past to the present day.
