Most romantic theatre in the West End
Date Posted: 26/01/15
When it comes to Valentine's Day, you can't do better than a West End show. Considered by many the ultimate end to a romantic experience, the combination of superb special effects, a great story and beautiful singing or acting can go a long way towards making that special someone happy.
But with so much choice available on the West End, what's your best option on Valentine's Day? Take a look below to find out which performances will help you hit the high note on February 14th.
The Phantom of the Opera
Mysterious cloaked strangers leaving roses all over the place. Secret passageways behind mirrors. An opera setting. And a ghost who just can't let the girl of his dreams get away. You're already breathless with excitement, so why not book tickets to The Phantom of the Opera this Valentine's Day? Andrew Lloyd Webber's classic is absolutely chock-full of beautiful music and magical moments, all surrounding a gorgeous story that will stay with you long after the curtain falls.
Playing at the Phoenix Theatre, Once is an extraordinary musical that revolves around a young Dublin-based busker who catches the eye of a Czech woman who stops to ask him one day about the music he plays. The story is a beautiful one but where the production particularly stands out is its staging, which sees the entire cast playing an instrument of some kind.
At first sight, with its sleazy 'Dreamland' strip club setting, Miss Saigon looks like exactly the wrong place to bring your significant other. Stick with the story though as Vietnamese woman Kim is introduced to American soldier Chris, who then swears to protect her forever more. Some of the songs are beautifully romantic - Sun and Moon and The Last Night of the World are both absolutely gorgeous - but you're better off leaving after the first act if you want a happy ending for the pair. If not, you'll need someone's shoulder to cry on.
The Woman in Black
If you've seen the film and think we've lost our minds recommending this on Valentine's Day, we beg you to stick with us. This brilliant piece of theatre starring just two (or three?) actors gives you lots of opportunity to snuggle up to your significant other due to the scariness factor.
Surreal and bizarre, Cats promises a magical evening as the Jellicles unite for their annual ball. The production will leave you intoxicated by the beautiful prose of TS Eliot, whose penchant for poetry bordered on legendary. The music is, as always with ALW, superb with stand-out numbers including Macavity and the unforgettable musical theatre favourite Memory. And with the First Lady of the West End Kerry Ellis taking to the stage as Grizabella in time for Valentine's Day, you can't really go wrong. If your significant other loves four-legged felines, this is the show to bring them to.
