The Master and Margarita returns to the Barbican
Date Posted: 13/08/12
Hit Complicite production The Master and Margarita is returning to the Barbican Theatre in London for a Christmas run.
Fans of the show should book theatre breaks in London between Friday, December 14th and Saturday, January 19th to see the play, which is directed by the founder of Complicite Simon McBurney.
It tells the story of Satan making the journey to Soviet-era Moscow with the aim to cause havoc through the exposing of hypocrisy.
Based on a novel by Mikhail Bulgakov that took more than a decade to write, it has a number of interlaced storylines that boast all manner of themes, from compassion to corruption and greed. Settings span the whole of history too, from 1930s Russia to Jesus' last days in Jerusalem.
McBurney is best known for his role as Archdeacon Robert in the BBC's Rev and Johannes Burchat in the historical drama The Borgias, as well as directing slightly more eccentric theatre.
